As our pastor, Marty L. Pressley, often says, we hope to treat you in so many different ways, you're bound to like one of them. This is a church with hearts that care, hands that serve, and where everybody is a somebody. When you walk through those doors, no matter what service, you are bound to feel welcome and right at home. A very friendly atmosphere, we don't care what denomination you are. Because it's not what name's over the door, but whose blood is on your heart! All are welcome who come with the intent of serving the Lord.
The church was conceived in September 1957. The first meetings were held in a ragged tent. Soon a space was rented across from the Carolina Woodturning Company plant (soon to become Singer Furniture, then Smokey Cove and Powell Industries). It was an old storefront with an upstairs apartment serving as the parsonage and classroom space. In the early 1960s, it was moved into the former Bryson City Citizens Bank building. There it remained until the present property was purchase for $2,000 in 1970/71. Construction was complete by 1972. There the church remained until the early 2000s, when the attendance rose and the building began running 3/4--full capacity, many services being standing room only. The planning stage for a new, enlarged facility began in 2003/04 under Pastor Timothy L. Howard. When Marty L. Pressley took over the pastoralship in 2005, the project was quickly carried on to completion; this was no small feat either.
In April 2008, the new Sanctuary was dedicated. The upstairs had been remodeled and built to house a much larger sanctuary (a 48 x 24 space being built onto the back), larger restrooms, a new pastors office, the nursery being moved upstairs, and a new sitting area. The sound room was moved into the loft. The Sanctuary is complete with eight chandeliers, a new baby grand (donation), loud speakers and good sound system, two television screens (donation) to help the visually impaired, handicap-accessible platform and pews, and stained glass wndows. While construction and remodeling continues downstairs, we have already outgrown our Sunday School department space. After the completion of the remodeling of the classrooms and the finishing of a new kitchen and fellowship hall (which will be dedicated to former pastor and wife Arvle and Marie Nations), the Pastor's Counsel plans to focus on the construction of a new Family Life Center at the far edge of the parking lot to house a larger Fellowship Hall, a few classrooms, a gym, and possibly a small library. Construction could begin on this project as early as 2009! Upon completion of this, we plan to remodel the Nations Fellowship Hall into much-needed Sunday School Room Space.
As stated above, anyone is welcome to attend our church, no matter what denominational background---you'll always fingd a warm and inviting congregational atmosphere and the presence of God in the form of His Sweet Holy Ghost.
