Luke 6-38

  • Luke 6:38
    • Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.

    • Giving in one of the most important disciplines of a follower of Christ. Because God gave up His Son, we (who receive of the blessings of this gift) are expected to give in return. But rather than suggest that giving is an investment, and equal return should be expected, Jesus is illustrating that giving up your earthly belongings will result in blessings more valuable than the things you give away. As read in Acts 20:35, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” The metaphor used may be unfamiliar to modern readers, as it refers to a practice of measuring grain. Pressing down on the grain, shaking it, and adding more grain until it overflows the intended amount– this is an incredibly generous measurement of giving.
