How can you begin to show your listener they need your Jesus?
Last week we spoke about just stepping up to bat by getting started talking to people and we gave you 5 tips on how to do that. You can't hit a homerun unless you step up to the plate and you can't start seeing your world saved until you start sharing the gospel. We have been talking this week about helping people go around the 4 Bases to hit a homerun in life.
The 4 Bases
1st Base - Sin, guilt, and judgment 2nd Base - Jesus, the cross and the resurrection 3rd Base - repentance and faith Home Base - grow and multiply through evangelism
Yesterday we showed how in Psalm 19:7 it says that the law is perfect converting the soul. As we begin to preach on sin, we are showing you how using the 10 commandments and asking people specifically if they have kept them will show your listener what sin is which allows the Holy Spirit to convict and humble them, preparing them for the good news of Christ.
Purposes of the Law
1.Romans 3:19- to shut the self righteous mouth and to show them they are accountable to God
Today let me share an illustration of how the law shows people what sin is and then a quick real life story to wrap it up. I John 3:4 says sin is lawlessness.
Imagine a young college student recklessly screaming around a college campus going 60 miles an hour in daddy's new BMW. When pulled over he self righteously asks the officer, "What did I do wrong?" with a mischievous smirk on his face. Once the officer shows him the 25 mile an hour speed limit and the area designed for the blind to cross, the smirk changes to a humbled law breaker nervous about the penalty of transgressing the law. Until your listener knows what the speed limit of sin is, they will always just blaze through the streets lawbreaking with no remorse. When you put up the speed limit of the 10 commandments like a good officer of the Lord, your listener will finally realize what sin is and the boundaries that they have transgressed!
I once spoke with a family member who was known as the family clown. Everyone loved and adored Cousin Nick. He was funny, loving, and just a good guy. As I began to witness to him and asked, "Nick, why should God let you into his heaven?” he answered with the standard, "I'm a pretty good guy." As I asked him if he lied, he said yes. I asked him if had ever stole something even something small, he said yes. Lastly I asked him if he had ever lusted which Jesus considered adultery and this is what happy go lucky Nick said with a shocked and somber look, "Jeff if that is what God is going to judge me by, I'm screwed!" The law had done it's job, showing dirty Nick what sin was and preparing him for Christ.
7:7 What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Howbeit, I had not known sin, except through the law: for I had not known coveting, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet:
2. The law shows the sinner what sin is and that they have broken God's sin limits!
