5:5 Blessed [are] the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. | | | Matthew 5:5 "Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth." Who are the meek that will inherit the earth? Jesus was looking out at the multitudes, and the disciples came to him, and he spoke and taught the disciples what is commonly known as the "Beatitudes" or "Sermon on the Mount". To receive the teaching you must be filled with the Spirit of Truth…of Christ, or the verses "blessed are those who mourn", or "turn the other cheek" will make no sense to you, instead they will frustrate you when you attempt to apply the meanings of the verses to your life. They are empty statements, unless you choose to be a disciple of Christ. To be Meek, is to act in total humility. The problem is, we tend to do this in light of other people. We look at someone else's life and say "I'm not like him or her", thus contradicting ourselves because if we walked in humility we wouldn't compare ourselves to someone else. Another definition of Meek can be "Me….eek!" "Me…yuck", but we won't see ourselves like that until we look at ourselves in comparison to the only one that was, is, and is to come, the lamb without blemish or spot, PERFECT in every way, Jesus Christ. Jesus said in Matthew 11:28 "Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light." A yoke is something that is used to carry weight equally upon the shoulders. It's like when we see someone carrying a long pole with 2 buckets equally distributed on each side. My eyes well up with joyful tears every time I think about that verse. Why? Because the weight of life that I carried, the weight of not knowing where the next meal was coming from, not knowing if the roof was going to fall in on me, not knowing if the boss was going to be in a bad mood and fire me tomorrow, not being able to sleep at night…all of that was handed over as His burden-- to Jesus...in exchange for what may have burdened Him. He promised that what burdened Him was far easier to handle than what has burdened me in the past or may overwhelm me in the future. Even more so-- what was burdening me in life I no longer had to worry about because Jesus is the God who cares enough to do something about it! May you see yourself as God sees you, and may God see you through the cloak of righteousness that Jesus has fitted you with!
