For me, I love the blogs that share personal experience.  I especially love the blogs where a person shares how God taught them something through their experience.

I avoid the blogs where people merely tell me to do something "good".  For example, I avoid a blog with a title like "PRAISE GOD ALWAYS".  God does a better job of leading me than anyone else can.

I also avoid blogs where people preach cultural preference on gray areas.  Most of the blogs concerning Halloween are a good example.

Any blog where someone says "I can't see how anyone can be a good Christian and do X", where X is not something the Bible states is a sin is also a good example.  I have to admit, I get pretty worked up over this kind of attitude.  Who am I to look at God's servant and judge them?  That's God's job.  I'm a poor substitute.

Great idea Jess...this could become quite useful to many of us...
1. I don't read blogs that are llllooooonnnnnggggg...I just don't have the time to read something that is as long as a book.  I want to read as many as possible, so I read shorter ones.
2. I do love blogs where people share their personal experiences, also blogs that teach a biblical principle by providing an analogy.
3.  I don't like blogs that cause arguments, although some of the blogs I have written have gotten more reads with the more controversial they are...I guess as long as we argue in christian love, and no one gets hurt, it is ok.  But some people can be hurtful.  If you write a blog about a controversial subject, be sure you are prepared to handle the comments and keep things in line.

I think there are a lot of blogs that I would like to read - the title caught my eye and the topic is of interest, but I just don't have the time to read it because it is very long.  I appreciate the effort and thought put into it, though.  That is not to say it is a bad blog or that it should not be long.  For me, though, that is one reason I may pass on a blog.

I also appreciate blogs about personal experiences, but I find myself reading blogs that deal more with Bible-study type issues.  Sometimes we can make our experience of God so based on our circumstances that we define our theology by our experiences.  I would be more interested in a blog that wrestled with a passage of Scripture and maybe used a personal story as an example rather than making that the focus.  Experience stories make us feel good, but they don't nourish us the way the Word does.

And as far as my blogs, I don't get bothered if one isn't read and I don't get too excited if one gets a lot of reads.  I figure - it's out there, those who want to read it or need to read it will do just that.

Thanks for starting this discussion!

Once again, the word is LONG. I can not handle LONG blogs.
Hint: Grab my attention with a snazzy saying in the first sentence & you'll probably have my attention the whole time.

Jess:

Since you cross-posted your link I hope you don't mind me reposting my comment. This little program is cool for those who don't like to read long articles.

I guess I would have to agree with you. Initially I look at the topic. Then I check the length. Sometimes I just don't want to read long, drawn out blogs. Especially if they are not double-spaced or paragraphed appropriately.

Often times I read the blogs that have been commented on a number of times by other readers.

But one thing I might suggest for some. Is a text-reader. For those of you who are not familiar, there are several text-to-speech programs available online for free. This way instead of reading long passages of text, you can simply copy and paste the text into the program application window and listen to it.

Granted, most of the free versions speak with a computer, or robotic voice. But you can certainly understand them. One of the great features I like is that you can speed up the speech to say, three times normal speaking speed, and listen "chipmunk" style.

Just a suggestion, but it does work and it allows you to search or browse through other things while listening.

The one I use can be found HERE

This is the comment i left on the other blog..........

I am a reader by nature, But on this site I have learned to allow the Spirit to lead me because sometime people will put up anything, and after you have read the things that they write you pretty much know what your  going to get, or you start to understand that all of them are not edifying. And than you have those "Like some of mine"LOL! are way to long, and you don't want to read it because after reading it you are confused. And than you have some who only seek a star! Just my thoughts.

Thanks Deb.  I think this is one of those blogs everyone can use.  It must have been God's idea.  I can't come up with anything this good =D

Thanks Spooksam.  I love this statement: Sometimes we can make our experience of God so based on our circumstances that we define our theology by our experiences.

Sorry Jeff.

The link rule is just for this blog, because of the nature of the blog.  I figure on this blog, where we are saying "I don't like this because...", it leaves too much room for blogger bashing if I let people link to someone elses blog and say "I hate Bubba's blogs.  Read them here to see why."

If you feel more comfortable deleting my response with the link from your blog, that's cool by me.

I feel a blog etiquette question coming up in me. Would you consider it proper etiquette to post a comment on someones page that is basically a preaching sermon?

We could call that: "Why I wont read your comment & others I do."
Becky

I have to agree with almost everything that has been said here.

I stammer a bit too when I see a long blog, but once I get through a few sentences then I have to find out the rest of the story so I read it anyway. This is something I am guilty of myself, writing looooonnnng blogs. I just start writing and can't stop, second thought, I probably talk the same way I write. Yikes.

I love personal experiences coupled with biblical principles or enlightenments. It is so cool to watch others grow, and more often than not you will find you are growing in the same areas as all your friends. I don't mind reading struggles either, and sometimes you find strength when you let go of it in a blog. Then you have your friends there to lift you up.

The one thing I do have a hard time with is layout pages that strain my eyes. Don't get me wrong, some of them are really cute and ingenious. But if I want to read your blog, I can't do that on the pages that have so many colors I can't make out the words. Then I will get frustrated and not get to know the person. That is discouraging to me.

I am more apt to read and enjoy blogs that aren't too long, and, even if they are blunt, you sense there is still a loving spirit behind it.  I love it when ppl are transparent.  Even when I don't always agree with ppl on their interpretations, that won't repel me.  The only thing that really has repelled me is false doctrines and blogs that seem to attack individuals or a group of individuals in a jealousy  provoked way, I sometimes think.  It's the heart behind the blogs, ultimately.

I love the variety we have on here!

Hi Jess...great idea here as always.  I don't like reading the long blogs either.  I do like the ones that seem to be God-inspired and seem to give you encouragement with the exact words that you needed to hear on that particular day totally pertaining to something you are going thru and that leave you going..."Wow, how did they know??"  And God is saying, "They didn't know....but I did!"  :)  I'm not particularly fond of the blogs where people talk about themselves.  I read about them on their profile message.  I think these blogs that inspire people to come together and all participate are great fun to read because you have so many people who are also responding with equally interesting comments and you seem to have a knack for those kind of blogs Jess.  And so do you Shan.  (Wink!)  Happy Holidays friends!

Wow!  Thanks All!

I guess this blog was really needed.  21 comments in an hour, and only 4 of them mine.  I didn't intend to copy another blog theme.  It seemed the other blog was mostly about blog length.  I wanted to open the topic up more.  Hope I didn't offend or confuse.

I'll respond to all of the responses when I get time.

Thanks, Shannon.  I would definitely respond to a blog about comments I do or do not read.

I always scroll down to see how long it is before I read it. When I do decide to read, I read in depth the first couple and last couple of paragraphs. And I skim the rest. I also tend to read more in depth blogs from people I have formed deeper relationships with and have gained great insight from. The other thing that I stay away from are people who post blogs everyday or more than once a day. It's too much. But for me to open it anyway I have to get hooked in by the title.

I pretty much repeated everything everyone else has said but that's my 2 cents.

Jess you hit the nail on the head with "Who am I to judge God's servant", Christ took a handfull of sinful men and turned them into warriors! no one has the right to judge except God!!!!! full stop.. I agree with you, we are not here to judge or fight each other because we don't like the way he or she does this or that. We all have a sinful nature even though we have been forgiven. We need to focus on Jesus and all will fall into place Hallelujah...do I hear an Amen?  Stu.

I am also a person who does not usually read long blogs.  I have a limited amount of time online so I try to use it wisely.  I enjoy reading personal experiences, news, and some of the teaching blogs (as the Lord leads).  I tend to steer clear of blogs that teach on divisive subjects.  I will read a longer blog when (a) I believe the Holy Spirit is directing me to or (b) if it is on a topic that I enjoy or have an opinion (yeah, I can be a bit opinionated! ;-) )  I also enjoy when others share their favorite videos, games, etc.

I think the key to a great blog is sincerity and application. I have people that daily post scripture on my page, like clockwork. Sometimes I approve them, sometimes I don't. Now I know their heart is in the right place. But I just cant get excited about random scripture with a little dancing winged angel, and no explanation of what those verses mean to them.

It is the same with blogs. Some artwork can be nice. And a  picture or two that is relative occasionally adds an impact. I guess what I am saying, is like the others, I like real life stories.

I read quite a few blogs, and try to comment frequently. I am about to give you an example of what I feel like is a very good blog. I don't mean to show favoritism, for they're are many great articles out there. This just happened to be one of my most recent favorites and it got little attention.

My example comes from Pastor Brian's Blog and is entitled "In Search of the "Perfect Gift"

Great job Brian!

Thank you too Jess. I am enjoying following this conversation!

I do write long blogs and most are scriptures, and some blogs don't make sence so I can't answere those, but all in all I will leave a comment if it a good blog.

try to read all blogs especally all my friends blogs when I have the time, and I do notice all blogs are not comment on because of lot of mind are not just for the reson you said Jessam I post blogs mosly about the word of God, I am a teacher in the word have been for years and Im not going to stop doing what God has call me to do so thre for it really does not really matter if you or anyone else choose not to read it, Im going to be obedient. and when I don't comment on a blog that I have read  it's truly because either it don't agree or it does not fit well in my spirit, but if it's something that I know it does not line up with the word I'm going to add the word that correct or add the word to go aloine because I agree see I'm all about give God the glory, and I really don't like talking about myself because this is not about me it's about who saved mr Jesus, So JesseAm I guessd I won't be seeing you on my blog comments LOL LOL It's ok I still love u  because that just my nature, even if you don't comment on mine

Thanks Shannon!  That's the best compliment I've heard as a blogger =D

I have a gift a teaching, and I've noticed more people learn something if I let God do the teaching, rather than me.  I learned more math from tutoring math, than I did from taking classes (although the classes were necessary).  I love to encourage people to teach themselves, with God's direction.  God and you can teach you better than God and I can =D

I don't read blogs that have boring titles; disagree with my views to an extreme; if I read someone's bolg once and thought, "they need to get a life."

I read blogs that have catchy titles; of friends; someone who has an awesome picture; has a topic of interest to me.

Jess, I wrote a blog once called "The Ideal MyChurch blog" which listed 35 characteristics of a great blog, in my opinion. Funny, the top three in my list are mentioned here too!

  1. is well formatted to facilitate easy reading
  2. utilizes a text size that is neither too large nor too small (see #1)
  3. does not involve too much scrolling to read it all
Sue
November 27, 2007 at 9:18pm
Post I like to read:

1.  When I know the author is funny.
2.  When I know the author has teaching gifts.
3.  When I see someone is new to MyChurch.
4.  A post from a MyChurch friend or someone from my local church.

Post I avoid:

1.  Copy and pasted post.  I want to hear from you, not something you found on the Internet!
2.  Long post
3.  Prideful post that suggest the author has all of the answers and the rest of the MyChurch community doesn't.
4.  Post where the font is too small or too light in color (such as yellow.)

Brent
November 28, 2007 at 12:15am

Jess - Interesting blog of blogs.  *grin* I am relatively new to MyChurch.  My experience with blogging was as a parent lurking on my kids Xanga sites and here.  I love sharing ideas.  I love being accepted in spite of differening opinions.

I tend to not read a blog that is judgemental or seems to now be spoken in love.  I don't mind topics I don't quite agree with if the topic is approached in love.

I would say length is not a distraction if the topic is interesting or if there are a lot of people I know commenting on the subject.  It is hard for me to read a blog that is not formatted (like if it is one long paragraph).  I keep having to highlight a row of text to not get lost in a long never ending paragraph.

The blogs I am really drawn to are real people in their struggles or sharing in what God has taught them, especially when they share what God has showed them through the scripture.

Finally, I would like to thank the people on MyChurch for the welcome I have recevied these past couple of months.  That is such an encouragement to me.  Grace and Peace, Brent

Hey so since just about everyone here has stated that they don't like a long blog, could I ask a question?

For us long winded bloggers, "What character or word length do you think would be the appropriate length to be considered a good blog read?"
JessIAm
November 28, 2007 at 11:04am

If I have to scroll constantly to read the blog, I think it's too long (if it's in a normal font size).  If it would print out as about a page or two, then I'll read it.

Of course, one of the best blogs I read was about a man and his dog, and what God taught him through his dog.  That one's on my list of perfect blogs.

BTW, Becky, I don't recall a blog of yours that I avoided.

Mike n Laura
November 28, 2007 at 11:08am
Becky, blog length is secondary to content IMHO. I think others have said so too. If you have a lot to say, lay it on us!!

(my own personal preference is one page though)
JessIAm
November 28, 2007 at 11:37am

One great way to write a longer blog is to serialize it.  Chop it up into managable chunks, and put an order number on it (My Serlialized Blog Entry Part 1,  My Serlialized Blog Entry Part 2, etc...).

Becky
November 28, 2007 at 12:43pm

Thanks Jess, but if it is too long for me to have to proof then it is too long for other readers. I will try the one page in wordperfect, or serializing in the future. I am in the blogging spirit again, and this is helpful for me.

Also another question, and I have seen where you have answered this before Mike and Jess, but I lost it.

* Could you give tips on copying links to other bloggers pages they have written?
* Also, How do you put the links to your blogs on the front of your profile all lined up and pretty?

I am old and like I said on my profile, a trekkie, not a techie... so teach this old dog some more tricks.

Great topic Jess!

I read blogs that Mike writes. And I read ones that show up on my main page as long as they ain't real long. And if they are real long i'll still read em if they got a bunch of stars or comments. And if I got a close friend I always try to read their blogs even if they are long. And if somebody reads my blog and comments on it, I try to return the favor and comment on their blogs.

My favorite blogs are ones that are under 1000 words and have a blue block with scripture in it, cause then I know it's backed up by a scripture. I also like to read about funny experiences... I still hain't got over the one Rosie wrote about being on her roof and screamin like tarzaan. Oh and I like blogs that have tests on em...like personality tests.

I have a hard time readin blogs that were copied off the internet. Or that got a strange font, or when all the text is centered instead of right justified... that's always a dead givaway that it was copied of the net.

As soon as I open a blog, my brain takes everythang in and I know right away if I'm gonna read it intently, skim it, or skip it.
