Article: Foster kids, meds merit exam (By Michelle Cole and Brent Walth) Source: The Oregonian (Nov. 27, 2007)
Content and problem or question raised Though many foster kids are given psychiatric drugs, the state's childwelfare system (of Oregon) does little to monitor the use of these drugs. It can harm kids' health and take life of them if it is taken too much.
My response For political side, we can take action to push state government to monitor the use of psychiatric drugs like other states do. If we know some non profitable organaizations that can help it happen, we can donate some money or put our signature on petition. If I have foster kids, I need to be more careful of the drug use. For spiritual side, I think we need to be able to show God's love so that they can go with less use of psychiatric drugs or without them. To be honest, I do not know how. I have heard about a boy who was eager to know the Father in heaven because his genealogical father had left him when he was a baby. If children in our church have a heart to reach them and invite them to Sunday school, if teachers are well equipped to lead them close to the Lord, their life will surely be changed. Things are not that simple. But at least, now that I know we have this problem in Oregon, I can pray for it. Not only for improvement of the monitoring system but also for spiritual welfare of those kids. I would also like to pray for foster parents so that they can give kids a better care and show that life can be better with Christ.
