2:3and ye have regard to him that weareth the fine clothing, and say, Sit thou here in a good place; and ye say to the poor man, Stand thou there, or sit under my footstool; 2:4 Do ye not make distinctions among yourselves, and become judges with evil thoughts? -Collared Shirt -Tie -No facial hair -Nicely Pressed Dress pants -Hair above the collar -Suit Jacket -Polished dress shoes
I had an interesting experience over the Thanksgiving holiday. We had a family member in who we are not 100% sure is right with God. When asked if he would like to go to church he responded by saying he forgot to bring his "church" clothes.
Those two words "church clothes" really hit me. Here is someone who is potentially unsaved and feels like they cannot attend church without proper attire. Have we as a church cultivated this attitude over the years? You need to have a certain dress code to attend our privileged institution.
I mean its church not a five star restaurant. Am I saying that we should not be respectful and reverent in the house of God and any type of dress goes? NO
Am I saying that I can be just as reverent and holy in my jeans and T-shirt as I can in my shirt and tie? Yes
I really don't think Jesus had people enforcing a real strict dress code while he was feeding the 5,000 Of course they were all pretty hungry and maybe that's the key.
"Do you see what Tommy is wearing in church today?"
"No, I cant really see anything my blood sugar is dangerously low."
I think common sense should prevail, below I have made a list of things that should and should not be worn at church:
Wear: Avoid: - Pants -No Pants - Shirt -No Shirt (particularly the hirsute in nature) - Shoes/Sandals -No Shoes (particularly the odiferous in nature) - Inspirational T-shirt -My home school honor student can beat up your christian school honor student T-shirts
Think about it as Christians are we alienating an entire group of unsaved people because they don't have "church clothes".
Lets stop being "clothed minded" (Sorry I could no resist the pun)
Until the next one Robbie |
