Dave,
I may have been dreaming it but I seem to recall a refrain from a song:
In a world gone wild; We're taking a ride; on the unicorn.
A unicorn is a magical creature that no longer exists. I wonder if it has to do with the future.

| Gene--I don't think you're going to find a definitive reference as to the origin of the term. It's all over the web in astrological, mythical and fantasy references, and is actually the name of an esoteric role-playing game as well. I've heard it used in a couple different ways. People coming out of the occult will sometimes refer to their relationship with a familiar as 'riding the unicorn', as in tapping into another source for 'enlightenment' and power with the knowledge that that source is not really controllable. There is a sense of being lost in the relationship/experience. Flirting with oblivion. Oddly, the term gets used as well in the extreme sports community to describe the 'rush' experienced when climbing, skydiving, extreme offroad biking, etc. Again, flirting with death/oblivion. Don't know if this helps at all. |

Don, I think it does help.
It just may be that the application I'm thinking about is the same thing except in a more spiritual sense. If it's "tapping into another source for 'enlightenment' and power with the knowledge that that source is not really controllable" then society as a whole seems to be doing this - with morality and energy and entertainment and more. "Flirting with oblivion" seem just about perfect then.
In that case I think we (the planet filled with humans) may be riding the unicorn. |

| I dunno.....anything to do with Puff the magic dragon? lol Hey! It's a long shot. |

|
| OK I remember a song by an Irish folk band about unicorns and how they were frolicking when Noah was loading up the ark. Hense there are no longer any unicorns. |

Dave, I had that album! (back then that's what we called them - albums. At least it was vinyl and not cellulose.) |

Gene, you had the album by the Irish Rovers? (entitled "The Unicorn" I believe)
As for your question, I have absolutely no idea! (How's that for wasting your blog space? I am so sorry....) |
