THE PLUMBLINE

7:1 Thus hath the Lord GOD shewed unto me; and, behold, he formed grasshoppers in the beginning of the shooting up of the latter growth; and, lo, [it was] the latter growth after the king's mowings. 7:2 And it came to pass, [that] when they had made an end of eating the grass of the land, then I said, O Lord GOD, forgive, I beseech thee: by whom shall Jacob arise? for he [is] small. 7:3 The LORD repented for this: It shall not be, saith the LORD. 7:4 Thus hath the Lord GOD shewed unto me: and, behold, the Lord GOD called to contend by fire, and it devoured the great deep, and did eat up a part. 7:5 Then said I, O Lord GOD, cease, I beseech thee: by whom shall Jacob arise? for he [is] small. 7:6 The LORD repented for this: This also shall not be, saith the Lord GOD. 7:7 Thus he shewed me: and, behold, the Lord stood upon a wall [made] by a plumbline, with a plumbline in his hand. 7:8 And the LORD said unto me, Amos, what seest thou? And I said, A plumbline. Then said the Lord, Behold, I will set a plumbline in the midst of my people Israel: I will not again pass by them any more: 7:9 And the high places of Isaac shall be desolate, and the sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste; and I will rise against the house of Jeroboam with the sword.

AMOS 7:1-9   HERE IN OUR PASSAGE, WE SEE THREE OF THE FIVE VISIONS OF AMOS. HE HAD A VISION OF GRASSHOPPERS IN VERSE ONE, WHERE AMOS PLEADS WITH GOD TO FORGIVE ISREAL FOR THE SAKE OF PRESERVING A PEOPLE LEST THEY BE UTTERLY DESTROYED. IN VERSE FOUR, HE HAD A VISION OF FIRE. AGAIN, AMOS PLEADS WITH GOD TO FORGIVE LEST HIS PEOPLE UTTERLY DISTROYED. THEN WE SEE THE VISION OF THE PLUMBLINE IN VERSE SEVEN. AS WE LEARNED THROUGH THE HISTROY OF GOD'S PEOPLE, ISRAEL, WE MUST LEARN TODAY THAT JUDGMENT IS INESCAPABLE. . JUDGMENT WILL TAKE PLACE SOONER OR LATER FOR DISOBEYING THE LORD. SO THE CHASTENING HAND OF GOD IS INESCAPABLE FOR THE CHRISTIAN AS WELL.

THIS VISION OF THE PLUMBLINE IS MOST IMPORTANT TO UNDERSTAND. IT REPRESENTS AND INDIVIDUAL ACCOUNTABILITY TO THE LORD AND EACH WILL BE DEALT WITH ACCORDING TO THEIR OWN INIQUITY. THIS WOULD ASSURE A REMNANT OF GOD'S PEOPLE THE PLUMBLINE IS THE WORD OF GOD. A PLUMBLINE IS A REGULATING DEVICE OR A TESTING INSTRUMENT. THE WALL IN OUR TEXT IS A PICTURE OF ISRAEL, THE ITEM UNDER CONSTRUCTION. AS GOD STANDS UPON THE WALL AND SETS"A PLUMBLINE IN THE MIDST MY PEOPLE," HIS WORD, THEY WILL BE JUDGED.

AS WE WATCH OUR NATION TURN ITS BACK ON GOD, YOU CAN BE SURE THAT NOT ALL AMERICANS HAVE REMAINED FAITHFUL. THERE  ARE STILL A FEW WHO HOLD DEAR AND LIVE BY THE PLUMBLINE, GOD'S WORD. INDIVIDUALLY, WE HAVE A RESPONSIBILITY TO MEASURE OURSELVES UP TO THE WORD OF GOD. UNDERSTAND, IN SPITE OF WHAT OTHERS ARE DOING AROUND YOU, YOU WILL ANSWER FOR YOURSELF. LIVE YOUR LIFE ACCORDING TO THE WORD OF GOD AND YOU WILL HAVE LESS TO ANSWER FOR  WHEN YOU STAND BEFORE GOD ON THAT DAY WHEN YOU BEHOLD HIM FACE TO FACE.
