GOD SENT HIMSELF

1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.




Don't we love the word "with"? "Will you go with me?" we ask. "To the
store, to the hospital, through my life?" God says he will. "I am with you
always," Jesus said before he ascended to heaven, "to the very end of the
age" (Matt. 28:20 NIV). Search for restrictions on the promise; you'll find
none. You won't find "I'll be with you if you behave...when you believe.
I'll be with you on Sundays in worship...at mass." No, none of that.
There's no withholding tax on God's "with" promise. He is with us.

God is with us.

Prophets weren't enough. Apostles wouldn't do. Angels won't suffice. God
sent more than miracles and messages. He sent himself; he sent his Son.

You know, those words probably meant more to Peter than anyone else who heard them that day for the first time.

"I am with you to the very end..."

Peter, a man who during Jesus earthly ministry was always getting it wrong.

Peter, who swore to die before deny twenty-four hours later denied three times he was "with" Jesus.

Peter, who after the crucifixion was ready to go back to his old life (I'm going fishing...fishing was his livelihood before Jesus).

Right before that Jesus had instructed them to stay put and wait for the Promise. They did not know what the Promise was. They just knew Jesus had promised it and that He was with them to the end.

If I am in a hospital bed and my wife tells me she promises to stay with me to the end I am going to assume the end is near. It may well be that many who heard those words believed the same thing. But they stayed. Including Peter.

I'm a lot like Peter.

Sometimes I get it wrong.

I've not always been faithful.

I have went back to the old life.

But there came a point in my life when I am with you to the very end became reality. Knowing His love is greater than my failure, weakness, and sin changed my heart. And today, I am with Him to the very end.
