I think that in many cases it is very difficult to move past friendliness for fear of disappointment in making friends that are not truly your friends. I think if there are not any expectations there will not be any disappointments. I think embracing newcomers is a great thing as well as getting to know both sides of the spectrum with regard to beliefs and ideologies. I have learned many things since my first visit to the Presbyterian Church.

We lead lives that are open books. Everyone and anyone is welcome in our home (as long as they can stand the mess!) We have been blessed with many, many friends in all walks of life. While this can be emotionally and sometimes financially taxing, we wouldn't have it any other way. The relationships that we have with others only enriches our lives more. Yes, there are some that try and take advantage, but I have found that these are truly few and far between. What wonderful experiences we would have missed if we were in the habit of keeping to ourselves and not putting ourselves out there! My mother doesn't understand the way we live, but as Danny says...she doesn't have to. Patty

That's a good blog, Steve. Really thought provoking. Thinking back to my period of church visitation, before we were settled on where we would attend regularly, I recall preferring to be a spectator, evaluating as an outsider as much as possible. HOWEVER, the friendliness and warmth factor did indeed loom large in my mind (and laura's).

One church we attended had a table with donuts set up right outside the sanctuary, I suppose for any who wanted. But I didn't feel welcomed to take one, and sadly passed up the donuts. We were not greeted by a single person. Well, I got over the disappointment of the donuts, but we sure didn't end up at that church.

I say hello to anyone who says hello to me.  It goes both ways.
