Does your Church have mice? Have you ever said that you loved to have been a mouse or fly at that Church meeting? Maybe not they might have been talking bad about you. Years ago when I was little my Sunday school had a Christmas play in that play my brother had a little peace If I was a little church mouse I wouldn't speak very loud but tell all the Gospel! In 1818 in the village of Oberndorf, Austria, Pastor Joseph Mohr was busy preparing for St. Nichola's Christmas Eve service. This year he was troubled, as the bellows in the church organ had been eaten away by mice and could not be repaired in time to be played at their Christmas eve service. Boy what trouble! I wonder if they ever had Church cats? Well back to the story. While he was preparing his sermon, he was called out to bless a newborn baby.It was a beautiful star-filled night, and looking up at the heavens he was deeply affected and inspired. He went home and wrote a poem. He got with Franz Gruber, who was the organist for St. Nicholas and who also played the guitar they put the poem to music. Silent Night, Holy Night was played that Christmas eve and became one of the world's best loved carols. When I went to St. John's UMC we did a Christmas play on Silent Night,Holy Night and at the end of the play we sang the song to guitar by candle light It was great. During one of the World Wars when we were in war with Germany both sides were fighting men getting hurt and dieing, during a calm moment some German soldier started to sing then another. Soon American started to sing that song then another. Soon you had both sides were singing Silent Night,Holy Night. That song brought peace for awhile so all got together put up the hurt and had some peace that day. If not for the Church mice were would we be? If not for that Holy Night when Christ was born were would we be? There is evil in the world maybe. But not for Jesus our light, hope and peace this world would be dark indeed. What do you think? Blessings! |
