| He Will Be Your Rear Guard |
|
| |
I love basketball. I grew up with a brother who was a pretty good player. He had a lot of records in high school and college. He was taking three point shots long before there was a three point line! So his records could have been even bigger than they are. As a matter of fact, he still holds some of the records at the college he attended (field goals made, free throws made, etc.), and that is without the luxury of the three point shot, and all those extra points.
The fact of the matter is, that in basketball, as in anything there are rules. Every player on the team has a job to do, and he better do it so that the team can keep running smoothly. My brother’s job on his team was to act as a guard. He did his job of guarding the basketball, looking for opportunities to steal it away. He was also dynamite with the basketball when it got into his hands. (Forgive the bragging, but hey, he is my brother!)
There are a few verses in the bible that I would like to share with you, that give me great comfort… Psalm 139:1-10 -
1 O LORD, you have searched me and you know me. 2 You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. 3 You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. 4 Before a word is on my tongue you know it completely, O LORD. 5 You hem me in—behind and before; you have laid your hand upon me. 6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain. 7 Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? 8 If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. 9 If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, 10 even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.
Isaiah 52:12
12 But you will not leave in haste or go in flight; for the LORD will go before you, the God of Israel will be your rear guard.
Isaiah 58:8 8 Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear; then your righteousness [a] will go before you, and the glory of the LORD will be your rear guard.
"…and the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard" (NIV). How comforting it is to know that the Lord is right behind me, guarding me from the forces of evil that try to knock me off course!!! He is doing a job much like my brother did, in guarding the basketball and making sure the other team didn’t get to make an easy shot. God is making sure that I am protected from evil, and He is constantly standing guard!
“You hem me in-behind and before; you have laid your hand upon me.” Not only is He behind me, but He is in front of me, and His hand is on me! He is close enough to touch, were He here in tangible form. When I am in trouble, or sad, or shaken to the core, He is right there with me, feeling my pain, knowing my every thought, my every sorrow, my every joy. Wow, that just gives me chills! He loves me enough to stay that close to me, to protect me, to guide me.
The next time you feel as though God has abandoned you, remember that He is your rear guard…he is behind, he is in front, he is there. Reach out in prayer and speak to Him, and ask Him to make Himself known to you, and you will feel His peace wash over you.

Deb, wonderful to read about your brother. Is he serving the Lord? Yes, the Lord is our rear-guard and like the true Palestine shepherd He goes before His flock. And then, He is above us and below us and all around us. And that reminds me of two verses [i] He surrounds us with His grace & favor as with a shield, Ps 5.12; [ii] The eternal God is our refuge and underneath are the everlasting arms. Deut 33.27 |

Well, Deb, your statement, "The next time you feel as though God has abandoned you, remember that He is your rear guard…he is behind, he is in front, he is there. Reach out in prayer and speak to Him, and ask Him to make Himself known to you, and you will feel His peace wash over you." was something I needed to hear today! ANOTHER excellent blog. |
