Our candlelight service this year reminded me of:
4:14 For if thou altogether holdest thy peace at this time, [then] shall there enlargement and deliverance arise to the Jews from another place; but thou and thy father's house shall be destroyed: and who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for [such] a time as this?
Oh, no – that was not the point of the message. The man of God was showing us the Light:
In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. (John 1:4-5)
That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. (John 1:9-10)
Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. (John 8:12)
We then circled the auditorium, each holding a candle with a paper plate protection. As Pastor lit candles both to his left and right, the glow increased, then moved in both directions as we passed along the illumination. It’s always impressive, beautiful and moving every year we participate.
Yet the thought came to me – If I don’t light the candle to my left, will the light be stopped? No. There were examples that evening. A child dropped her candle before the light reached her and was still groping for it as Esther 4:14 was fulfilled – another completed the task that had been hers. In another instance, someone stepped out of line in response to another call – another completed the task that had been his.
The light continued to move around the room, passing from life to life. Some glowed large and long, others flickered and waved in unseen drafts. Some lit quickly, others need a long time with the flame to catch. Just as mankind is prone to do when touched by the Light.
Will “enlargement and deliverance arise … from another place”, or will we fiill our place in God’s eternal design? We are here for such a time as this, acting within His will. |
