| Is Everyone Welcome? |

I stumbled across this statement on church membership I drafted in July, 2004, after someone came down the aisle who made me wonder, "Hmmm. Is everyone really welcome to join?" It's still a working draft, but let me know what you think. A Statement on Membership, July 19, 2004 At First Baptist Church we welcome into our building anyone Jesus would welcome, and into our membership anyone who calls him Lord. We do this regardless of gender, status, ethnicity, orientation, or virtue. We believe that no one comes to Christ who does not need Christ; we acknowledge our own need for change without shame. We trust the grace of God, the love of Jesus, and the power of the Holy Spirit to do their transforming work in the life of every Christian. We recognize our own responsibility to encourage and admonish our fellow members so that together, “speaking the truth in love, we may grow up in every way into him who is the head of the church” (Ephesians 4:15). We come into the church just as we are, but—for Christ’s sake and for our own sake—we don’t intend to stay that way. |
