Perfectly fine, Vanilla!  Underline passages that speak to you as you read.  Record notes in the margins as your pastor or teacher expounds on a passage in a meaningful way . . . If you're uncomfortable writing in your Bible, an alternative is to keep a notebook as  you read and study.  The disadvantage to the notebook is that the next time you read that passage, your notes may not be easily accessible.  Here's a blog I posted about Bible reading:  http://www.mychurch.org/blog/33230/Is-Bible-Reading-a-Chore

Well, if you can still read it after you mark it, I'd say it's OK.  In Mark 2:27, Jesus was speaking about the Sabboth, and how it was made for man.  That's true of the Bible as well.  If marking your Bible helps you get more out of it, go for it.

Mark 2:27
Jesus said to them, "The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath.

The Bible is given to us to know God's heart and will. It is sacred Book, but we don't worship the papers bound by Zondervan. I fill in about every corner of blank white space I can with notes.

I agree, marking is a blessing.  One old bible I've had for over 30 years was very highlighted; I found another new bible just like it and had someone copy the different color highlights (yellow, green pink, purple) to the new one, we were both very blessed. I did the same thing again with a Greek bible I now have.

My very first bible was highlighted in yellow and underlined and had things written in the margins....I think your bible is your work book of sorts and after all "study to show yourself approved" That bible became spineless and even had some pages loosen....a friend of mine told me of a place I could take it to have it rebound...I just might do that some day.  I think that bible represents how hungry for the Lord I was when I first got born again....Now I have so many different bibles and not one is really my favorite....although I am leaning towards the larger print version. Vanilla, what's your real concern about marking it?

Make it your very own!  Bibles are personal and they love to be touched and loved on.

I have highlighters of all colors. I mark verses according to topics so I can look for verses of the same color and put them together.

Nothing wrong with marking in your bible. My mother left me her bible when she passed away. It's all marked up. Her favorite verses, promises she was standing on, all her childrens names written in it, and on and on. What a wonderful gift she left. I gave it to my sister. So mark away. Just think, if the Lord tarries, maybe someday you can leave that old marked up bible to your child.

Give 'er.  It's nice to underline or high lite special verses that jump out at you, or write something beside one.  Anyone who thinks differently is making the Bible into an idol.

I also put dates besides scriptures that are important to me. It gives me a sense of history and helps me remember the times God spoke to me through His word.
