| Psalm 22 proves Jesus was who he claimed to be |
|
| |
I have this feeling that fulfilled prophesies are one of the more powerful yet under-utilized tools of evangelism. Having just a single prediction of the future come true is almost impossible! (I’m not talking about Nostradamus, whose predictions were obscure enough that they can be interpreted to predict any occurrence.) But what about when a whole series of amazingly precise predictions come true? And the power of prediction increases the further before the actual events the predictions are made!
One of the most astonishing examples I’ve run across is Psalm 22, a psalm of David written 1,000 years before Jesus was born. I imagine Jesus knew this psalm well. After all, he seems to have quoted the opening line while he hung on the cross: “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Psalm 22:1)
So that part of the psalm is likely not what we would call prophetic. However, there’s plenty that follows which certainly is.
Consider verse 7 - “All who see me mock me; they hurl insults, shaking their heads:"
Then check out Mark 15:29- “Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads…” The passersby surely had no idea what was written in Psalm 22, and this didn’t stop them from behaving towards the crucified Jesus exactly as was written in the psalm!! It seems possible to me that Mark could have had Psalm 22 in mind as he wrote his gospel, yet this doesn’t change the fact of the way the crowd acted towards our crucified Lord, fulfilling this prophesy.
Next we read in verse 8 - "He trusts in the LORD; let the LORD rescue him. Let him deliver him, since he delights in him."
And Matthew quotes the religious leaders mocking Jesus on the cross, “He trusts in God. Let God rescue him now if he wants him, for he said, I am the Son of God.” Again, no doubt Matthew knew Psalm 22. But would he dare deliberately misquote these powerful and influential observers? It seems certain that they at least said something very similar, as predicted by David 1,000 years before!
It only gets better from there!! Verse 14 says, “I am poured out like water”. Compare this to John 19:34, “…one of the soldiers pierced Jesus' side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water." The formerly life-preserving liquids of Jesus' body poured out when he was pierced by the spear, and this wasn't even what the soldier was instructed to do! (He seems to have actually been ordered to break the legs of all three crucified men.) So how incredibly unlikely that this particular prophetic line would be fulfilled, and yet it was!!
Verses 14-16 go on to say, “and all my bones are out of joint...you lay me in the dust of death…they have pierced my hands and my feet.” These phrases paint a very clear picture of a man nailed on a cross! Crucifixion was a particularly gruesome innovation of the Romans, and therefore completely unknown and undreamt of at the time of the writing of Psalm 22 in David’s day!!!
And famously, verse 18 says, “They divide my garments among them and cast lots for my clothing.” Unbelievably, that is exactly what the Roman soldiers did at Jesus’ feet while he hung on the cross! According to Mark 15:24, “Dividing up his clothes, they cast lots to see what each would get.” Mind you, these soldiers certainly knew nothing of what was written in Psalm 22, so it would be laughable to assert that this played out simply because someone wanted to make a prophesy come true! lol
It would be amazing if just one specific detail of Jesus’ crucifixion was given in Psalm 22, written so long before it happened. It would be exponentially more fantastic if just two or three more specifics appeared predictively in this psalm. But, almost absurdly, there are no less than eleven specific details of Jesus’ crucifixion given in Psalm 22!!!! This is completely beyond rational comprehension!! (The odds against this are surely in the zillions!) Unless of course, Psalm 22 was inspired by God, and Jesus’ crucifixion was merely the outworking of a divine plan hatched before the beginning of time!! In which case what choice do we have but to surrender our lives completely to an all powerful God and his all encompassing plan?
If we were to plop the amazing prophesies of Psalm 22 into an unbeliever’s lap, explaining the date of its writing relative to the events of ~33 A.D., what do you think the response would be?
[UPDATE 6/6/08] I presented the subject matter of this blog to a co-worker a few days ago. She offered the objection, "so how do we know the early Christians didn't alter Psalm 22 after Jesus' death to include these references, so as to look like fulfilled prophecies?"
In response, I pointed out that there appears to be proof that Psalm 22 was not altered, as suggested. The Psalms, being in the Old Testament, would be part of the Torah, still considered scripture today by unbelieving Jews. Today's Torah is essentially the same as the Old Testament currently in use by Christians. The question is, why would unbelieving Jews ever have consented to use scriptures that were altered to point to Christ as the Messiah? Answer is the scriptures weren't changed in any way. As scripture says, the Jews are simply blinded to biblical proofs (such as Psalm 22 - here from the Torah) that Jesus was their Messiah. |

Now that is a zillion dollar question. My prayer would be that their eyes and heart would be opened. Isn't the book of Psalm beautiful! For several years, I stayed in the New Testament. Rather arrogantly, I felt we weren't under the law so therefore I only needed the New Testament. Boy, was I so wrong! thank God that He opened my eyes. I truly love to read your blogs. They challenge me to study and to spend time with My Father. God Bless you. |

| Thanks so much my friend, I recently rented "the case for Christ"which really is excellent when it comes to apologetics. They sure make a point of the astronomical chance of any one person fulfilling all those prophecies. BTW even if youve read the book the movie is still excellent. Especially for people who are to smart to be christians. |

| Cheryl, thanks so much (!!), and yes, I too have come to appreciate Psalms, almost more than any other part of the Bible!! Dave, prophesies like these almost make apologetics easy, don't they? Job, it mystifies me that the Jewish people can't see. Larry, a thousand amens, my friend!!! Stuart, ain't it marvelously mysterious how God makes all the pieces of the puzzle fit together so perfectly? Robin, thank you too, and I pray this psalm touches you as deeply as it did me! |

| Isn't it amazing how easily the world brushes of such an amazing thing as fulfilled prophecy? But yet, the world is so ready to believe any sound bite or email hoax that they come upon? As always, this is a great insight to share. Thanks, Mike! |

You are right Chrissy the world does seem to brush off the most amazing things that God has done, not only those seen in scripture, but those lived out in our daily lives. God is great and His amazing grace can change lives. Mike I agree that fulfilled prophesies can be a great tool in the Holy Spirit's hands. Thanks for reminding us of his amazing life, death and resurrection as seen in the old testament prophesy. peace |

Glenn, been awhile since I've heard from you. Hope all is well! Thanks for your comment. Chrissy, I almost continued this blog to explore the reasons why the world brushes off spectacular prophesies such as those above. <laughing> Instead of doing specials or documentaries on the amazing prophesies of scripture, which are accurate, precise, numerous, and redundant, they waste their time exploring the vague and ambiguous writings of Nostra-whoever, which constitute predictions about as precise as those found in a fortune cookie!!!
Thanks Patrick, it is good to hear from you again too my friend! |

Well, I see your blogs will be just as mind provoking and ever educational as 2007. Thank you my friend.
Nostradamus, Cacey, etc, etc, etc, the secular world examines and re-examines with voracity, yet when it comes to the undisputed WORD OF GOD, they brush it aside. Have you ever really truly wondered why? TRUTH is like a GOOD CLEANSING of ------- and the devil can't stand it. Anything problem you may have there is an answer in the bible. If you want poetry, music for your soul, medicine for your pain, common sense for your brain, it is in the WORD. What is to become of mankind is there and the world is afraid. Glory to GOD for who he is and what he has in store for his children.
I can hear unbelievers saying, "Cayce, Nostradamus lived and we could see, touch, etc. them". JESUS lived and he is well and alive today. He is the breath we take, the sky we see, he is life and he is truly amazing. If we are not open to him, I guess we cannot see and can only see what is in our very narrow view.
Our Survival Guide is so amazing and what is so remarkable is that each reading brings something new and refreshing to light. THANK YOU FATHER for continuing to open my eyes and my heart to your words of wisdom.
Love ya Mike |

| One of the great prophetic passages! The one I find so amazing is about casting lots for the clothing. Although this was common over the centuries when deciding disputes, how was anyone to know that it would not only still be used more than 300 years later but that it would apply specifically to the situation of the crucifixion?! How great if the Lord! |

| My brother doesn't believe that the bible is the true word of God, so I know of at least one person who would say that it was all just made up anyway! Unfortunately, I haven't been able to change his mind, but it is my life's mission to do so, with God's help. I certainly believe it, and find it amazing, but then we have an amazing God! |

I have often come across these prophesies in my reading and I attempt to use them whenver I'm conversating with someone who is struggling with Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the Lord. As a new believer, one of the first battles we face is denial that Jesus is the Christ who was prophesied to be our savior. And I strongly believe that you and I could preach the Good News until we are blue in the face but man will not receive the Good News until The Lord opens a man's eyes and ears to the word. Facts cannot give a man faith. But a relationship with God will grow man's faith and Trust to the point of eternity.
The funny thing about prophesy is that scientist and wise men are usually the first ones to notice that a prophesy has been fulfilled yet they themselves don't believe.
Blesses are those who believed before seeing.
And I think that all the children of God have believed before they saw and that is why we struggle with sin because we are putting trust in something we cannot see with a definite eye. Too see God would cause our death because we are so filthy. What a conflict! Yet, as we grow stronger in the faith, we see God more clearly and all that was preached to us from our father's becomes more evident in our lives.
Thank-you Pastor Tim for sharing Psalms 22 with your friends. |

Mary, what a sweet, kind thing to say....thank you! I agree, not only does the Bible have all the answers to life's problems, but prophesies such as these clearly show that it isn't someone's "opinion", manmade myth, or educated guess that we put our faith in, but the perfect redemptive plan of God put into action before time began!
Thanks Paul, Kim, Rimosmob, and woman of joy!!! Gene (with the red shirt, as opposed to the other Gene - with the yellow shirt), I agree with you that prophesies such as these drive us who believe to praise the Lord!!
Deb, after reading and digesting this psalm, I am motivated to present this to my own brother(s) who do not believe, along with the fact that this psalm was written 1000 before Christ was crucified, and get their reaction. When I read Psalm 22 for the first time, I felt like my mind would explode! (The oldest manuscript of Psalm 22 dates to around 100A.D., but clearly pre-dates Jesus. And there are enough historical records to at least show that there was a man named Jesus who was crucified by the Romans around 30A.D. The details in the gospel accounts are pretty much undisputed. So the facts all seem to point clearly to fulfilled prophesy!)
Aaron, you're right too. Folks don't see b/c they choose not to see. Do we absolutely have to have faith before we see? I don't think that's necessarily so in every case, b/c the purpose of prophesy is to validate the truth. Thus truth can be validated, then the "oh yeah, now I see" moment can come! BTW, Pastor Tim didn't write this, but I'll take that as a giant compliment! :-) |

:-) Sorry Mike. I'm still a work in progress. Forgive me for my simplicity.
And yeah I agree, you don't have to have the faith to see. |
