The Problem of Delay

Why does God delay matters? Why can’t He answer us at once? Why all this waiting? This life of faith is difficult. We have to keep on believing, even when things seem to be totally against us. God has given us a promise, and we are nowhere near the fulfilment of that promise. God has given us His word, His unfailing word, and yet it seems the word will never come to pass.

It is as if we have gone ‘under’. Waiting and waiting, almost beyond hope itself, and yet believing with a weak and frail belief that seems ready to snap at any time. We have become so weak and helpless and it seems nothing can be done. We cannot do anything but wait. But how long? [This was the dilemma that confronted David in Psalm 13, which I have paraphrased in an earlier post.]

Even if we try to do something on our own, it doesn’t work. Any effort on our part, using our own wisdom and strength, recoils on us and brings many complications. We wish we had never done what we did! Why did we not leave things to God?

And so we are tested with regard to faith and patience. We cannot hurry God. He knows the time that is best for us. He has His appointed time. And when He comes, we hardly recognize His coming because it just happens. Nothing dramatic, nothing spectacular. God came and did it in His own time and in His own way. And when we look back, we find ‘His way was in the sea, and His paths in the mighty waters, and His footprints may not be known.’ Psalm 77.19

Boy I'm right there. I want big flamboyant results in my time, but of course God looks at life from his perspective. I think part of it is a testing, After all he does tests us, and refines us.

Psa 90:4 For a thousand years in your sight are but as yesterday when it is past, or as a watch in the night.

2Pe 3:8 But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.

In God's sight One thousand years is like an evening or one day. So even if we have to wait for 70 years (one's life time), Its like a fraction of a second in His eyes. So if we understand His perspective, the wait is not a wait after all.
