I was watching Joyce Meyer the other day, and she shared something that has really stuck with me. Apparently they have done studies that show that 10% of people will not like you. She was sharing these results to let people know that no matter what you do 10% of people will not like you. Instead of always worrying about how to make people like you and trying to impress and please everyone, we just need to be ourselves. We need to treat others with kindness and respect, but not try to impress them or change ourselves to be liked by them. Since we will always have people who do not like us, we need to stop worrying so much. I am one of those people who want to be liked. I want to do and say the right thing at the right time. I do not want anyone to dislike me. I think that is why many people are not real with others. They are always just trying to impress others instead of being true to themselves. The point Joyce was making is be true to yourself, because 10% of people are not going to like you regardless. Be good to others and true to yourself, and if someone does not like you, do not beat yourself up over it. Our personalities are different and some just do not mesh well together. Just be kind and move on.

On one hand I felt much freed by this revelation. No matter what I do, or how hard I try to impress others, 10% of people will not like me. So, I should just be myself, and stop worrying so much about whether or not people like me. I mean 90% is pretty good. But there was still that insecure part of me that said, “But I want 100% of people to like me.” Isn’t that always the case? You hear of something meant to free you and you just twist it into something to hold you back. I’m still growing. I hope you like me.:-)

I thought for sure that this blog would be about tithing when I saw the "10%", but I am sure glad it was on this topic. This is much needed in the church, and I received the Word sister! I think it is more like 30/70 with me :), but that's okay, Jesus is in the 70%!

It always seems like there is one person every place I have ever worked and one at every church I have attended that just doesn''t seem to like me (I am sure there are more, but one always stands out). I used to try so hard to get that one person to think differently and the more I tried the worse it got. I often feel misunderstood and I would think "if I could help them understand me." Until recently, in the last few years, that the Lord has shown me to just let those people think what they want. If they have a problem with me, then they have a problem, not me. I don't ignore these people, nor be rude, but I don't go out of my way to try and please these people either. This has really helped my worrying and peace of mind. I just deal with these people when necessary and keep the conversations brief. (Since something I say is bound to tick them off anyway :)

I know that Joyce gets a lot of criticism, but she sure is anointed and always seems to meet you right where you are at. I love her books..have you read any? She is one of my favorite authors.

90%! Sweet! If you think about it. That means that nine out of ten people you meet will like you for being you. I gave up trying to impress others a while ago.

It got to be too much effort for little reward. Just being me has made me many more friends in many places. A smile, positive attitude, and Christian compation are great equalizers.

That's a very interesting concept - and really helps me feel OK about knowing that's just the way it is, and not really about me... So I am going to try to let go of feeling awful when I know someone doesn't like me!
