| The Manure Pit of Happiness |
|
| |
I remember a story that I heard way back in high school. It went like this:
A little bird was flying south for the winter. It got so cold it froze up and fell to the ground in a large field. While it was lying there, a cow came by and dropped some manure on it. As it lay there in the pile of manure, it began to realize how warm it was. The manure was actually thawing him out! He lay there all warm and happy, and soon began to sing for joy. A passing cat heard the little bird singing, and came to investigate. Following the sound, the cat discovered the bird under the pile of manure, and promptly dug him out--and then ate him. The morals of the story are:
1. Not everyone who drops manure on you is your enemy. 2. Not everyone who digs you out of a pile of manure is your friend. 3. When you're in the manure, keep your mouth shut!
The point I would like to make is that every day, we get something dumped on us…some kind of manure. Whether it is a problem with a job, family, spouse, something not working right at home, or even something so simple as a bad weather day. We don’t like it, we complain, and we try to change things. We open our mouths and spew out things that might get us into more trouble. At least I know that I am guilty of this. I always want to fix things, to make things right, and maybe things just have to be wrong for a while.
During those times of life, when things don’t go as planned, or we find trouble lurking around every corner, we need to call out to our Lord more often. It may be His will that we go through these times, and somehow, He will get us through to the other side. But a lot of people, who get down in these manure pits, turn away from God, when they should be running to Him!
Being a gardener, I know that manure is sometimes used as fertilizer for plants. From that manure, mixed with the dirt and the seeds, grows some beautiful plants. Without the manure, the plants might not have grown so tall or luscious, the seeds might not even have sprouted at all. Can’t we say that in life, things are like that as well? Without the problems, we don’t grow. Without the problems, we might not even begin to know our potential, and we cannot be the creatures that God wants us to be. Without the manure, we can’t appreciate the beauty that follows when the plant blooms to full maturity.
When you are warm and happy in a pile of manure, just picture that beautiful plant that will be the result of all that manure. And don’t forget to keep your mouth shut!

| Deb what a fantatic blog! A line in one of my favorite songs says something to the effect that "everything needs a little "rain" to grow". Thank you for sharing your heart on this subject. |
|
|
| Deb! I love this title!! And the blog too :).. very relevant analogy for me. |
|
|
| LOL... Deb, that is imaginative, and true. ...and funny. Love it! ~mike |

| Moral #4- If you are a cat and find a chocolate covered bird, leave it alone! |
|
|
| As I was reading your blog I could not help reflecting on what James talked about regarding viewing trials as a blessing. Sometimes we forget that what God is doing is forming the character of Christ in each one of us. One of the ways he does not is through trials. Thanks for reminding me to keep my trials in proper prospective. |

| This is so good....I love this story....I am going to apply this to my life, because when things go wrong, I always try to fix things....I should just leave them alone...Thanks Deb...You are a blessing... |

Paul...hmmmm? lol
Charlie, thank you and you are welcome. I am glad you enjoyed it!
Carebear, thank you for your nice comments, and I am glad that you enjoyed it!
Mike, I am glad that you got a laugh out of it. It was enjoyable to write too!
Doyle, thank you!
Rich, if the "chocolate" covering the bird, was really chocolate, it would be a different story! lol
Pastor Tim, it is so easy to forget that our trials exist to help us grow and teach us something, especially in the midst of those trials. We just want it to end, but when we get to the other side, we can look back and see what a chance for growth it was.
restore, thank you!!!
Chrissy, I am glad you enjoyed it!
Coreena, thank you and you're welcome!

| Another great blog, Deb! Funny how "little sayings", like the morals of the story--can say so much! Fun way of speaking some serious stuff most of us have to deal with! This type story is easy to "remember", too. |

| Talk about power in words.Wonder if that little bird, thawed out & began smelling the manure and was complaining, whining, fussing, and got stuck in his pity party, rather than calling out to God.Sometimes we do the anger, complaining, whining thing & those very words feed the negative in our situation like that cat fed on that little bird. |
|
|
| Yep, word for me! Yeah, one of my friends said the like to me, "what do they dump on gardens to make things grow?" Right. So it is with us, as you have said. We share in this struggle and I appreciate these posts on this topic. It really exhorts me and that is good! |

Racunpoodle, that is a very thought provoking comment! I never thought about it that way, so thank you for sharing that, and making me think a little differently about this situation!
Lara, I am glad that you enjoyed this and got something out of it. That is what it is all about. |

| Thanks for the word- I definitely have been feeling the "manure" piling up recently... Thanks for the perspective and I hope I'll learn to "keep my mouth shut!" |
