1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 1:31 And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, a sixth day. There seems to be a lot lately about science. It seems science has become the evil bane that is out to destroy Christianity. Apparently we have to watch out for evidence that is misintrepreted and therefore "destroys our faith". You know what? I agree with much of that. I do believe we need to watch out for things that are misinterpreted. And maybe it's something in science. But there are other places where people misinterpret things. I have trouble being fearful of nature disproving God when God is the one who created it all and therefore it should (and is) chockful of evidence for Him. I just finished up "The Case for Faith" by Lee Strobel and 218 pages in to the book found the following: David N. Livingstone, a professor in the School of Geosciences at the Queens' University of Belfast, Northern Ireland, focused on Christianity's gift of science. "The idea that Christianity and science have constantly been at loggerheads is a gross distortion of the historical record," he wrote. "Indeed Robert Boyle, the great English student of chemistry, believed that scientists more than anyone else glorified God in the pursuit of their tasks because it was given to them to interrogate God's creation." He pointed out that those in the Reformation "believed that God has revealed himself to humanity in two ways - in Scripture and in nature. This enabled them to engage in the scientific investigation of the natural world." The result have been sweeping contributions by scientists who were spurred on by their Christian faith.
The pharisees and many others proved that it was quite possible to bury your head in the Bible and completely misinterpret everything. There are many scientists who bury their head in Mother Nature and completely misinterpret everything. I don't particularly care to become either. My understanding of things can be wrong. God's isn't. 3:5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not rely on your own insight. The Bible and nature are not at war. They are not out to become their own rulers. It's man that is. And man has proven that he can and will use both religion and science for his own purposes. We need to be aware of that and keep that in mind. |
