The Dry Hands But whosoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst; the water that I shall give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life” (John 4:14). God has let her drink from His living waters, and she was protectively carrying her newly born fount in her hands. She carried it through the woods, mountains, and deserts; and here and there, through her trembling fingers, an accidental drop would leak out and hit the ground. She hastened her pace tightening her fingers and not looking back to see the precious drop slapping the rocks. She ran over the huge stones, logs, over the dry and empty lands, holding on to what she had, so that no one could take away her crown1. Yet, the faster she ran, the closer she was to the end, and the more water splashed out of her palms. Still, she felt more or less composed or at least purpose-driven, while her fingers could sense the moisture. But very soon they couldn’t. She lowered her eyes only to see her hands empty… Not a single drop was left. She powerlessly crashed to the ground bursting into tears and looking desperately at her dry palms. She unclenched her tense and glued to each other hands and confusingly stretched them before her splitting the stream of bright daylight into the thin rays with her fingers. “Is that it?! Is that all I can bring to You? And I haven’t even gotten to the end…” She sobbed giving herself away to weeping. “This is the end, you have finished your walk,” His voice sounded out from the light. Having heard her Creator, she began to cry even more bitterly. “What does it matter now? I have nothing left. Everything You’ve given me I lost on my way…” He ran His fingers through her hair and was silent a moment. Then He spoke quietly: “Look behind you. What do you see?” She wiped her swollen eyes and turned slowly. “I see a great number of rushing rivers and waterfalls and small fountains…” “Remember the lost drops?” He said. “Right at the spots where they have fallen, new springs of living water originated. These rivers that you see were born from each of the drops that I gave you.” He smiled, “Now does it matter?” Her sobbing stopped, and she peacefully gazed on the moving waters behind her. Her brows, however, still hid a silent sorrow on a slightly furrowed forehead. At last, she uttered, “This is exactly what I wanted in life… to bring You and Your love to the people… And here I see that You’ve given me everything I wanted… Only…” He was listening attentively. She sighed, “Of course, I ran… but I myself am left unworthy2, having come to You with dry hands…” She kept her face turned away from the Lord in shame. But He answered her, “Dear, I have given you a fount that easily fit in the palm of your hand, and you have brought me back the running streams and mountain currents – in deserted and forgotten places where they were not before and where My name is now alive.” ----------------------------- 1 Revelation 3:11
