Thanks,  Pastor Tim;

Yikes,  I work for Hamilton Center so you know what field I'm in even though I only have a High School Education.  Occasionally I have to wonder;  Did I just give a Demon a Seroquel.

When it comes to Science having been educated in the public school system.  I lack the skills to really argue creationism;  but that's what I believe deep down where I believe stuff.

Having been raised as a Lutheran, I have to be honest that even something as simple as simple as investigating a personal hero like Martin Luther can present a problem as apearantly my many of my Catholic friends seem to believe that what I consider a great reformer was a little less than Great.

Sorry about rambling.

Blessings,

David

P.S.  C.S. Lewis is kind of I don't want to say hero,  but he's a real easy author to read.  Right up there with Thomas Merton.

Dave, I once worked at Hamilton Center too, so I know how difficult it is to be a Christian working there. You are a light in darekness there, and having an impact that you might not even realize. I appreciate your stand for the Lord.

Makelly, Thanks for your kind words. You are always a source of encouragement.

I had to look up Seroquel too. I found out that it is a drug commonly used to treat bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.

Pastor Tim,

You said, "We need to be able to grapple with ideas and filter them through a Christian worldview."

"A worldview should contain a particular perspective regarding each of the following ten disciplines: theology, philosophy, ethics, biology, psychology, sociology, law, politics, economics, and history.”

Well this may be a bit simplistic for some, however, grapple I do...

Theology -  Psa 83:18

That [men] may know that thou, whose name alone [is] JEHOVAH, [art] the most high over all the earth.

Philosophy - The Book of Proverbs,

Ecc 12:13  Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this [is] the whole [duty] of man.

Ethics -  The Ten Commandments,

Biology -  Gen 1:1     In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

Psychology -  Rom 12:2   And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what [is] that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

Sociology - Jhn 15:13  Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

Law - Luk 10:27   And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself.

Politics -  1Sa 13:1   Saul was thirty* years old when he became king, and he reigned for forty-two years.

Economics -   Mal 3:10

Bring all the tithes into the storehouse so there will be enough food in my Temple. If you do," says the LORD Almighty, "I will open the windows of heaven for you. I will pour out a blessing so great you won't have enough room to take it in! Try it! Let me prove it to you!

History-  Jhn 1:1-3

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

The same was in the beginning with God.

All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

Pastor Aminata, amen, amen, amen! It's God's Word that leads us. You are definitely a woman of the Word!

I thought I would briefly summarize my beliefs on the the first five.

Theology – God is creator and sustainer of the universe. He has revealed himself via both general and special revelation.

Philosophy – The reason why a Christian philosophy is so important is because, according to C S  Lewis, there is so much bad philosophy that must be answered.

What is philosophy? It is the love and pursuit of knowledge. Proverbs 1 beckons us to attain knowledge, learning, understanding, and wisdom. Our knowledge base, however, comes from God’s special and general revelation. Therefore, I believe a Christian view of knowledge seeks to “We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” (2 Cor. 10:5).

Ethics – A Christian view of ethics is rooted in God’s moral nature. “God always hates evil and loves good.” The Bible teaches us the difference between good and evil. An ethical system that is Christian is an ethical system that bases its beliefs on God’s Word.

Biology – Genesis 1:1 states, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” Therefore, this means that “creation and not evolution accounts for all life on earth.”

Psychology – The Bible speaks about human nature better than any psychology textbook. This doesn’t mean that psychology cannot be useful, but it is important to recognize its limitations. I believe that this is important since we live in day and age where psychology is hardly ever questioned (even in the Christian community) and almost always assumed to be true.

Pastor Tim,

I so agree with you regarding the Bible and psychology.. The problem as I see it is that many will refer to our secular scholars....first.... as if they have the first authority... and then later perhaps look for supporting reference from the Bible.   The Bible - The Word of God should be our first authority.... and everything will fall into place.

I really love your thinking.

Pastor Aminata,

You couldn't have said it any better and I totally agree. The Bible is our FIRST AUTHORITY. I have been teaching on religious liberalism at the university where I serve as an adjunct instructor. What is interesting about it this is that because the authority of the Bible has been undermined the idea of it conveying propositional truth has been undermined as well.

What was taught was that ethics are more important than doctrine. Thus doctrine takes a back seat. Adolf von Harnack taught that Dogma is a Greek concept and not a Hebrew one. He reasoned that what the Hebrews taught was primarily ethics. As a result, liberals adopted a way of reading the Bible that says the way you read the Bible is to find out how you should live. You were not to read the Bible to find out what you should believe. To some extent I think we see the Bible as simply a tool to tell us how we should live and neglect the fact that the Bible tells us not only what we should believe, but it trumps all other ways of knowing.

Pastor Tim,

Here is where the problem exisit:  One's ontology may be skewed when we dare to reduced the Onmiscience down to our finite thinking, rather than accepting the challenge of struggle, to understand the mysteries of God and His creation.   Shame on us, for accepting any theory that does not accept God as the one and only "Truth".

You make me wanna come to Indiana.... just to sit at your feet...
