2:20 And the man gave names to all cattle, and to the birds of the heavens, and to every beast of the field; but for man there was not found a help meet for him. 2:21 And Jehovah God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof: 2:22 and the rib, which Jehovah God had taken from the man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man. 2:23 And the man said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. 2:24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.
· God created us with the express purpose to form relationships. A relationship between He and us; and for us to relate together. The special relationship of Marriage between a woman and man is shown in this scripture. God showed Adam that he needed someone on equal footing: a companion for man. Only woman was fully qualified to be this companion. Not a servant to man but someone who helps man.
· I've always like this quote from the Complete Commentary: "She was not made out of his head to surpass him, nor from his feet to be trampled on, but from his side to be equal to him, and near his heart to be dear to him."
· So many people like to pressure couples into having children "to start a family". I believe this scripture defines the human family as a husband united to his wife. Children extend that family. Marriage may be defined as a God-ordained, blessed, permanent, one-flesh, covenant relationship between a man and a woman.
· There's a permanence that is established in this relationship by the word "united". They become one. In order for that to happen a covenant (a promise agreement) has to be established and maintained. Our wedding vows establish that covenant before God and everyone we know. This covenant is sacred to God. Breaking the covenant with our spouse will hinder our prayers from God.
