| Friends first (sorry!!) |
|
| |
Hiya friends / readers. Let me start here by saying, this is definitely not the blog I had intended to write as my first entry since an “interesting” weekend. This entry actually has been brewing for some time now, and is actually motivated by what I see as a potential problem for this site. Hopefully I’m concerned about nothing major, but it’s on my mind, and it was definitely on someone else’s mind over the weekend (yikes), so I’m writing about it.
Each day when I log into my MyChurch account, the first thing I see is the “What’s Fresh” section, which lists memos and blogs from friends. On the one hand, this is great because it allows me to focus my extremely limited time and energy on the contributions of folks I know have good, positive, and encouraging things to say, things that will build me up and benefit my walk with God and relationships with people. It also allows me to focus on those I know need prayer or encouragement because of the difficult place in which they find themselves in life.
But there is a downside too, unfortunately. The subset of people in my What’s Fresh section doesn’t seem to change that often, so I keep seeing contributions from the same 10-20 or so people. This means I’m neglecting an awful lot of great content on this site. I keep going to other friends’ pages and discovering all the blogs I’ve missed out on. Or I go to the Explore link, and am blown away by the amazing revelations, the deep insights, the heartfelt cries and sharing. I gotta tell ya, it’s a real bummer to miss out on this stuff!!
BTW, did I mention how extremely limited my time is right now?? Life is very busy right now, and I am so sorry that I haven’t reached out here lately as much as I would like!
So how does the recycling of people in that What’s Fresh section work? This is a technical question, and I have no idea what the answer is. I’m sure there is a very good answer though, as I am continually awed by the technical genius and social consciousness of those behind this site! (If I had a hat on, then it would be hats off to you guys!)
Ultimately I believe it is mostly my loss, when I don’t get out and read more of the content which gets posted on MyChurch. But those who write also feel as though they are overlooked and neglected, as though nobody cares. This hurts them, and believe me, it hurts me too. I wish every writer was sufficiently read, and made to feel valued by comments and/or stars. But there are human limitations, choices are made. And apparently technical considerations have an impact too! There are thousands of writers. Everyone wants to be read!
Oh if every writer were a reader too! I know this writer has been, and when my schedule calms down (mainly work), I know will be again. I promise I’ll find the time to bust out of my “What’s Fresh” clique and learn more about what the MyChurch world has to offer. For now though, please forgive and bear with me (and others) who, due to shortness of time or other reasons, find themselves limited to friends first!

"Oh if every writer were a reader too!" Mike, I think you packed a lot of "the answer" in this one sentence. We all want to be heard and don't understand why thousands are not flocking to read our blogs, when the reality is they don't know about them and are short on time they can spend on MyChurch. As you pointed out there are thousands of others who are writing and wanting to be read, and we have to ask ourselves "Do I expect others to want to read my blogs when there are hundreds of blogs daily that I don't read?" I too wish I had time to read more, and when I miss a blog, it's not because I don't care about the person who wrote it.
I haven't figured out the What's Fresh system either, but like you, I begin there when I log on. |

| Mike - excellent points as usual! I just wanted to write that "I feel you Dog"! :-) |
|
|
| I really enjoy the Explore section. I've discovered a lot of good things there, Mike. I tend to focus on the things that speak most to me. There is a lot of good on mychurch but none of us can consume it all. I guess we each need to let God lead us to the blogs and people that He wants us to connect with. Good, thought provoking post worthy of a star. |

| Donna, you can subscribe to their blogs, then just click on subscriptions to see what has been posted. Takes much less time. :) |

| Great blog! I have not quite figured out the explore section yet but, I promise to try and find time to learn it. The fresh section is what I look at first and I don't think I am getting notices on all myfriends blogs. I agree, I (we) are missing out on great friends out there by not leaving our "fresh" world! |

Mike, I too am limited for time. When I have more time I do check out the explore option. For now I am doing my best to read my friends blogs and respond if there is time--even if it is just a star to let them know I am with them. Many days it is hard enough just keeping up with that. I appreciate this blog. It has really touched a cord with me!
I promise I’ll find the time to bust out of my “What’s Fresh” clique and learn more about what the MyChurch world has to offer. For now though, please forgive and bear with me (and others) who, due to shortness of time or other reasons, find themselves limited to friends first! ME TOO!

| If I am not mistaken, I think your local church friends have a huge priority in the What's Fresh section. I also think that if you are subscribed to a blog, it will have a greater chance of showing up there. And if Mike n Laura are in your church....be on the look out for your What's Fresh section to be over-taken by comments, when they add a post to the church blog! Totally messing with you dude! You know you are one of my favorite peoples :) |
|

Mike,
I so agree, it's hard to keep up with just my friend list.... but I do try to reach out to others as well. Thanks for the reminder to go above and beyond.

| The "Explore" section of MySpace has much to be desired. It's so darn hard to search for a variety of blogs besides those that have action in the past 5 minutes. |
|
|
I try to touch on Mychurch everyday, but it is becoming increasingly harder with a heavier workload and other pressing matters (like everyday life) LOL... I try to go to the explore section often but it usually shows the same people over and over again ???? Then I go to the people section and again the same thing.... I have made quite a few friends from those sections, however most of my friends come the pages I know of (thanks guys)... I try to post something at least 3-4 times a week as the Holy Spirit inspire me. I feel as time goes by the site will improve more and more, thanks to the GREAT people who put it together.
Love you guys |

| Does anyone else find it interesting that once you start plugging in, making friends, and benefitting yourself/others on this site, your schedule then starts to crowd out your time on here? Don't know if this is really true for many, just seems like it to me. I guess I'm thinking, Satan has a way of adjusting to compensate for the things we find effective at bringing us closer to God and others. |

Eric joggled something in me. Although I can't give enough kudos to the MyChurch techies, if I could make one change it would be in the blogs. First, I'd like to see a one-click route to the blogs, as I suspect our many members who are less savy with computer networks, as are many in my own church, don't know how to find the blogs (and don't even know what they don't know how to find). I'd also like to see the link changed from Posts to Blogs, for better understanding by all tech levels. As mstovall says, we tend to see the same faces over and over, and they're beautiful faces, :) but I wonder if thousands of other faces are just not finding their way around.
Also, something I've caught myself doing a couple of times, and don't know how many times it may have happened that I didn't catch, relating to starring blogs. I can't say this with any certainty, as I haven't experimented with it, but it seems that sometimes when I type a comment and check the star box, then return to add to or change my comment, the star disappears. I don't know this, and of course don't check the star lists to see if I'm on it, because I "know" I am. I have sometimes looked a blog's star list, and not found myself on it, thinking all the while that I had starred it. On one of my blogs, I received an over-the-top encouraging comment, claiming the commenter wished she could give me multiple stars, but I got a good laugh, because she didn't give it the one! :) Could have been forgetfulness, as could be mind sometimes too! Has anyone else noticed anything like this? |
|
|
Kathy, great call. This site used to have one-click access to blogs, I don't know why it changed but I am sure it was intentional (I recall a few complaints about the change, but it never reverted back).
Regarding the star-the-blog checkbox, it is indeed intermittent. I never use it anymore b/c it often doesn't work for me. Shame on me for not bringing this to the attention of the staff - I know they'd address it in a heartbeat if I had. But for me, if the workaround is painless, I just do it. When I determine to star a blog, I will click on that daggone button a dozen times if I have to until I see that star register! lol |
|
|
| thanks!!!!!!!!!!! I hit the Explore blogs section several times a day. |
|
|
| I have so many friends on here now, I try to read their blogs first, and when i acutally do have a chance, i will go on the Explore page and start skimming through blogs for something to catch my eye. I know whatcha mean though. :( I am the kid who got left out a lot as a kid. The last to be picked on a team (except once the kids figured out I could kick a soccer ball hard and far, then they overlooked my lack of coolness), so it still bothers me to have anyone be left out in the cold or feel they aren't loved here or overlooked. I will never let myself forget how it felt. But I have a kid too to raise and I guess all I can do is pray that God leads me to those I need to connect with. |
|
|
| BTW ppl, never feel obligated to read my blogs. I am honestly not in this for "stars" or popularity or whatever. Of course we all like to get some feedback, but I also understand that we have lives outside of this site. O Kay? |

Can I be a dissenter? :) <-- Smiley because most know the answer. I like that the "What's Fresh" starts with Friends, Church, etc. because there I *do* know these people. This isn't speaking out against those who aren't my friends, but rather for those who are. Friendship at times has to be intentional. After the last move, I made it a point to try to stay in touch with folks from my former place of residence. Many of them did not follow suit. No call backs when I left messages, never called me leaving me as the person who had to make the calls (which for an introvert doesn't work so well) and so on. My choice is whether to continue to pursue. Some I chose yes and well... others I haven't (yet). So in a land where being someone's friend takes some work, I like the fact that some of it is made easier. :) Yeah it can lead to cliqueness, but there is no reason someone can't come bother me either. And no that's not to say there aren't a couple of things I would change (to get to a more consistent interface overall), but I don't have time for those right now. ;) |
|
|
Mike, you are a brave man to bring up this subject! If we're honest, we all like the idea of being popular and noticed. The hard reality, though, is most people focus on what is important to them at a certain time and ignore the rest. People are not intentionally mean, they're just busy. It is not personal. Part of pursuing any sort of writing hobby or career is the understanding that 90% of whatever you write will go unnoticed by the masses. It is the nature of the beast.
I subscribe to many blogs through google, and I read some blogs here. I am blessed and encouraged by many of the blogs I read here, but find myself focused more on the blogs I have already subscribed to than newer blogs. When I have a quiet moment, I do peruse the explore area and have found lovely gems there. When I do, I subscribe to them, too! I figure if the Lord wants me to read it, He'll show it to me. Not every blog is meant for every person on MyChurch.
I enjoy writing blogs myself and kept in mind from the get-go that I was writing to glorify God and to leave something tangible (and maybe even of value) for my children to remember me by when the inevitable happens and I am one day face-to-face with the One I was made for. If no one else reads what I write, that is ok with me. If others do read and are blessed, challenged and maybe even laugh, that's even better! But if they don't, it's cool. It's not personal, so we can't take it personally. If God wants us to do it, He'll bless it. That's it. |
|
|
| Soozanne....{sigh} okay, ya got me. It does feel good to be popular for sure........but I still don't get the star system yet. lol |

Rosie, that's from a song, isn't it???
Soozanne, I would like to frame your 3rd paragraph (starting "I enjoy writing...") and hang it above the computer where I do all my writing. I can identify!
Norm, you are a funny man my friend! Your perspective is appreciated, and I hope we didn't give you much to dissent from/against. I probably could have emphasized further that I don't seem to have much control over exactly who ends up in my What's Fresh clique - whereas in your pursuit of relationships outside of websites you do have that control.
I still troll the Explore page as often as I can, looking for as wide a variety of writings as possible to uplift, encourage and educate myself, and on which to post my own comments, viewpoints, questions, encouragements, etc. I just haven't had the time to do this that I'd like for, oh about 3 months now. (boohoo!) If only I could get paid to do it!!!!! What d'ya say, Carebear!? lol |

| Yes, time is limited for most on this site, to be able to read the blogs...I try to get in as many as I can as time permits, and comment on most of them, sometimes I just leave a star. The more friends you have the harder it gets to read all the blogs. Anyone that I don't want to miss a blog from, I subscribe to them. Otherwise, I not only look at the "friends" blogs, but also explore to see if I might have missed anything important. |

Hopefully you give me lots to dissent to. Otherwise I don't need to hear you speak/type. :) (Well there's a certain part of me that needs reinforcement but I think that would not be the part that this blog is speaking to in general). And really in outside life I don't have that much more control over who ends up where. I've been friends with a number of folks that I didn't expect to be friends with. A bunch of those just ended up happening after much talking. The one person I talk to the most since my last move is the person I thought I would be least likely to talk to. The thing about friendship is that in order to be friends you have to have 2 people willing to work at it. It's not saying that there are people who you can be friends with that you talk to a lot less can't be friends, but that for you to be able to speak without having to reinvent all of the assumptions you have as friends (which should probably be investigated on occasion) which allow better communication it can't be years between discussions. |

I realize that first comment probably seems harsh. I think friends can agree on many things. But it actually goes back to my issue with the stars serving a dual role here. I use stars to say "Me too" a lot of times if you say something I agree with. If I don't, I usually don't add a lot because "Me too" seems like bad etiquette. I suppose I could grunt instead. :) So when we are here (on a blog/place of discussion) if everyone is just adding "Me too" to discussions is there really a point to writing? |
|
|
| So true Mike I wish I had more time for reading and commenting. Excelent post my friend |

| Aha, case in point! The checkbox doesn't work! Well, thanks for trying Cheryl, the fact that you thought this worthy of one of your stars does the trick for me (not that that's what this was about, but you know what I mean... God bless you!! |

It's only because I always do it. (Like right now. Oh wait I can't forget when it's that obvious. Wait, look at those nice goldfish. Actually I saw a comedian once ... I realize that's a 4 paragraph joke (that has to do with the goldfish) but I just don't have the time.) Really though, watch my writing. You'll see missing parentheses although I've gotten better about writing in that style. |

I nearly forgot what this blog was about with all the talk about parentheses and that action packed display of busy people and the star box not working. All of which is facinating. I sometimes agree with what Norm was saying. In my limited time I am often looking to my friends pages, especially those that have spoken a word in my life in the past. I suppose that I am probably missing out on lots of things that God would speak to me about, but figure if He wants to get my attention he will. Anyway another thought provoking blog my friend. peace ps lets see if the star thing works 21 now and... |

We just have to put out there what is in our hearts to write...and let God take care of the rest!
If not one person reads what we write, then at least we have been obedient to the stirring in our hearts.
We pray that we, ourselves, are not operating, or posting for any selfish reasons, and let God take care of everyone else. We cannot examine anyone else's heart but our own.
Love you and Laura!!

Mike, I'll tell you what I do but it is, as you say, an effort. And, unfortunately, I don;t always have time to read everything. I have about 30-40 bloggers to whom I subscribe. In the "what's Fresh" what you get are your friends. I try to visit those but can't always get to them on a regular basis. I'm on page 3 of "My Subscriptions" right now trying to get up to page one. If I miss the "what's fresh" I check those subscriptions. And you can subscribe without asking to be a friend. That broadens what's available (parenthetically speaking, of course).
btw: Does anyone have a slick way to add a smiley inside a parenthesis without have a double grin? (Other than adding an icon? - :)) |

Gene, how do you keep up with 30-40 bloggers!!?!? (You must read an awful lot - which is awesome if you've got the time!)
Um...Cheryl, I thought the topic was how we get trapped in our own "What's Fresh clique" sometimes, forgetting or unable to reach beyond to the general population/Explore link. I liked Kathy's suggestions/recommendations way up there, which I'll recap:
1) rename the "Explore" button to "Blogs" and 2) one click access to the blogs (now it's two)
Norm, quit changing the subject, and quit dissenting all the time! (Oh I forgot, since you are always dissenting on my blogs I must be doing something right lol!)
DK...great to see you!! Megan, I will check out that link today (now I'm headed off to work), thanks!! |
