Mathew Philip, great blog! The amazing love of our heavenly Father never ceases to amaze me.... which, as you said, keeps my eyes focused on him! If his love wasn't so captivating I'd be likely to simply do my own thing and forget about him. But who can forget about a love so amazing!!

Thank you Mike for your insight and encouragement. Yes, it is His love that unites us together... God's blessings on you.

This story of God the Father's love and forgiveness for the backsliding, repentant SON tells believers about God's character...it's a way for Christians to get to know who He is, so they are not afraid to return to the Father after lapsing into sin and losing fellowship with Him.

I've heard this story many times told as an evangelistic message too. The "son" is a son (like Adam) because God created him, not because he was adopted into the  Kingdom.
There is a danger here.
In America, most people assume that because they believe in the Bible, the creator God and in heaven...that God is love, God is forgiving, Jesus died for the sins of everybody and since they believe (mentally) in God and Jesus, having even repeated some words of repentance:

( "Now, just say the ABC's of the gospel, kids, and you will be saved. Admit, Believe and Confess. O.K.? Now you're saved. Just put your name in John 3:16 and you're in.)

But...their hearts are not changed, they don't turn their lives over to Jesus as Lord and they don't read the Bible, pray or go to church.  But they think they are saved because they did as directed.  It's tragic!   It's "easy believism" and it is rampant. Probably 90% of Americans are this kind of Christian. Bogus. No power of the Holy Spirit because He does not dwell within.
It could be we need to dwell on the repentance part and go over the 10 Commandments and help people SEE that they are not keeping them, and get them to admit to specific commandments they have broken....and to see the Holiness and Perfection of God...who has EXTREMELY high expectations and will not admit everyone into heaven because "their good mainly balances out the bad".

Also, our pastor spoke on this once. And he used to have to feed pigs on a farm. He said that the pig food was all the leftovers off people's plates, peelings, garbage and food no longer good for people...all dropped into a bucket until it was fermented and full. Then, this noisome smelling mess was quickly poured into the trough. You'd hear one pig give a snort, then you better not be standing anywhere close, or you'd be trampled to death by these big hogs. They literally cared for nothing but the awful slop....and would stick their whole heads down in it and make the most awful slobbery sounds.  Can you imagine the "son" EATING the pigs' leftovers? Or wanting to and there not being any left? And of course, pigs were not kosher, and were considered the essence of vileness to a Jewish boy. It was a job from hell, and he felt he deserved it.
Then he "came to his senses" and returned, thinking to be a slave at his father's house...or so he hoped.   So our attitude to God ought to be: we don't deserve God's blessings, but we will serve Him gladly for all He has done for us and all our vile sins that He has forgiven on the cruel cross.
