Video Lesson
1They went across the lake to the region of the Gerasenes.[a] 2When Jesus got out of the boat, a man with an evil[b] spirit came from the tombs to meet him. 3This man lived in the tombs, and no one could bind him any more, not even with a chain. 4For he had often been chained hand and foot, but he tore the chains apart and broke the irons on his feet. No one was strong enough to subdue him. 5Night and day among the tombs and in the hills he would cry out and cut himself with stones.
What many people do not realize is that when the devil influences a person from the outside with oppression in an area and if that person doesn't close the door, repent, change their life, or do something different, the devil will take his demonic activity to the next stage; oppression to obsession. When a person is engrossed with a particular thing, and this thing goes beyond occasional thought and feeling, this person is obsessed. A person who is obsessed is constantly thinking about a particular thing, person, habit, or attitude. That's demonic activity - the devil is always the one to lead us to extremes. God will lead us to control, chastity, discipline and temperance. The demons in the spirit realm lead us to lawlessness. So from obsession, if there is no check done, no deliverance, no ministry or no repentance, then you would move to possession, which could take place on three levels. Possessing one’s body- the temple, possessing a person’s soul, and finally, a person being fully possessed, that is, their spirit now is also possessed - spirit, soul and body. If a devil has any measure of success with a person on any level, be it oppression, obsession or possession, he will always call in other spirits, his pals, to bring in other elements in order to gain greater leverage in this human being’s life. Let's say a person is lying, and is so good at it that he/she attracts a lying spirit. The lying spirit now has a level of control in this person’s life, so the lying spirit has the right to invite a manipulative, controlling spirit. This can go on and on, until a person is under the influence of many spirits. This is no doubt what happens when we read the book of Mark in chapter five. Here we find Jesus’ explanation of demonic activity. Mark 5:8-9 AMP “For Jesus was commanding, Come out of the man, you unclean spirit! 9 And He asked him, “What is your name? He replied, My name is Legion, for we are many.” Here was a man who opened his life to demonic influence, which led to his condition. Anytime anyone allows any evil influence in, that person is susceptible to other influences. In the following verse, Jesus explains what can happen to us when one demon has legal entry into our lives. Matthew 12:43-45 NKJV "When an unclean spirit goes out of a man, he goes through dry places, seeking rest, and finds none. 44 Then he says, 'I will return to my house from which I came.' And when he comes, he finds it empty, swept, and put in order. 45 Then he goes and takes with him seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter and dwell there; and the last state of that man is worse than the first. So shall it also be with this wicked generation."
