Hi Laura (not my Laura)! I would be careful about linking Christianity with either political party, as this only tends to divide us, rather than unite. BTW, neither party has in it's platform "spreading the Gospel of Christ."

ps... I'm a registered Independent!  :-)

well I think that's an interesting take on it.. I guess if you see division.. then division is what you see. I think that the 7 values above actually unite..

Spreading the gospel is through our actions as far as I can see it... since I agree with the political and legal idea that government and church be separate and not interfere with each other, I would have an issue with a religious agenda for any party. But as a Christian, with my vote and with my voice I will support the candidate with a platform closest to those 7 values.

I agree witth those 7 values, but there are other things promoted by the Democratic position that I believe to be anti-Christian.  The same is true of Republicans, some of their positions are Biblical and some are against Biblical principles.  Last time I voted for the Green Party.  What to do?

Wow, Laura -- taking on both Politics and Religion. You do like to live dangerously! (So do I)

I claim to be a conservative, traditional, Republican-leaning, sometimes libertarian, middle-aged white guy. Funny thing is, none of those labels hold true -- as if they could.

Currently I am reading two books by Brian D. McLaren. (So much for my conservative, traditional self-image -- oh well.) While I had heard of him before, and read snippets about him, I was not sure what to expect. I had checked out his church's website, expecting to find? something mumbo-jumbo-y about emerging church, and left intrigued that my initial perception was that he/his church sounded comfortably uncomfortable -- not in your face radical -- rather, questioning, seeking... Anyway, that led me to "Everything Must Change"... and now, in early mid-stream, I am taking draughts of good news from "The Secret Message of Jesus". I commend both books to you. In fact, if you like, Laura, I'll buy them for you -- not sure I can lend them -- not yet. These are not quick reads -- though they are not hard to read, and are most conversational, really -- they are reflective, ask many questions, and lead to introspection. I am amazed that McLaren is vilified in some quarters -- as if being a very human pastor, with doubt and faith, were a bad thing.

Anyway, why bring him up? In the "Secret Message of Jesus" I think McLaren addresses the issue of politics and religion in a very different -- decidedly non-partisan -- way. He focuses himself on trying to discover the essential message -- the real good news -- of Jesus -- and he finds a message that resonates (or should) with all people. All, except, those clinging to the status quo. Hence, I surmise, the sequel 'Everything Must Change". (I haven't gotten that far yet.)

I don't know who The Christian Alliance for Progress is -- or really care -- it sounds (and looks) like just another "us" versus "them" variant on themes that divide us. OK, it is "progressive" -- but I am willing to bet that it begins with a political point of view and shoehorns some subset of Christian-like beliefs into a pre-set agenda -- which makes it like every other brand of Christianity out there. To paraphrase -- they all may be hazardous to your [spiritual] health.

I invite you to read this book -- then let's have some conversation. I think you might like it. But be forewarned, you may never look at politics in the same light again. And, for absolutely sure, you will never look at being a Christ-follower the same.

What I've been thinking about lately is that the divisions we see, the divisions we participate in.. are within us. And as I said last night.. I can't wait to see what the book has to show me.
