| Do you know where you're going? (John 14:1-6; Focus v. 5-6) |
|

How often do you struggle in search of God's will or direction for your life? Do you know where you're going? We often become stressed or frustrated about God's will. We want him to simply boom from heaven with clear specifics. Perhaps, we've made this more complicated than it needs to be. I believe we have because we think this story is about us. We wouldn't say that outright, but deep in our subconcious (or often openly), we do believe it's about us. So, we want to know the direction for us.
As Jesus prepared his disciples for his crucifixion and departure, he stated that he was going somewhere that they could not come ... yet (John 13:31-38). He communicated that they would join him later. They were confused, wanting to know where they were going ... their direction. What's the plan for us?
Jesus communicated to them simply:
14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. This story is not about us. God can use us wherever we are -- finance, technology, ministry, education, and so on -- if we follow him. Sure, we may receive a specific calling. Unfortunately, we so often spend so much time at determining our calling or direction that we're not simply following him. AS we follow him, the direction that he has for us will become more evident. He'll let us know how he wants to use us in his story. But the role we play is not ours to worry about. 26 From one man he made every nation of men, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he determined the times set for them and the exact places where they should live. 27 God did this so that men would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us. 28 'For in him we live and move and have our being.' Acts 17:26-28a NIV He has determined our role. Ours is to simply follow him "for in him we live and move and have our being." Wherever we are, whatever we do, he will use us if we see him as "the Way" and our "Life" and follow him.
Live in His story!

I have been struggling a bit myself with knowing God's direction for me. I was discussing this recently with a friend. The searching led me to a point where God spoke clearly to me, not about direction, but about assurance. The conversation with God on the way into work that morning went something like this:
Me: God, I'm struggling. I so want to know your direction for me. I need clarity. I left a career to make a difference for you. Please show me your path for me.
Prompting of God: Trust in ME with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek MY will in all you do, and I will show you which path to take.
There was a clear connection in my desire to follow his path and that sequence of thought which led me to Proverbs 3:5-6. God was telling me to TRUST him. I was too busy trying to figure this out myself. In his call to seek his will, he's asking us to be obedient. He has said that he is not willing that any should perish -- that's part of his will. He has promised to continue his work in me -- that's part of his will. The conversation continued ...
Me: Okay, I get it. If I trust you and follow you, you will direct my path. I don't need to know where I'm going, just that I'm going where you lead and that you're there with me. But, how will I see you; how will I see the path.
Prompting of God: MY word is a lamp to guide your feet and a light for your path. To know MY will or MY path for you, You need to hunger for MY words, study MY scriptures. I am revealed in them for MY word is powerful. You're overanalyzing this -- Trust ME, learn of ME. Walk as you follow my leading; don't stand there or worry about your life, waiting for ME to tell you where we're going. Just Trust ME.
Me: I understand, but it doesn't make this much easier. Help me, please, to trust you. I'm taking the first step and I don't know where my foot will fall.
Prompting of God: Russ, this is MY story. I'm giving you a chance to be a part of it. I'm the author of the script. Just trust ME, walk with ME, and enjoy the adventure. I will never leave you nor will I forsake you. Follow ME. |
