I wanted to share a comical story with you about going to the doctor and taking my girls with me. Here goes.
A few weeks ago I noticed a bump on my back, just under my right shoulder blade. Actually under the bra strap. It didn't bother me so I ignored it. During last week it got tender and increased in size. Over this weekend it became painful and tender to the touch. I realized it was most likely a boil. I've had them before so I began to treat it at home. Over the next 3 days it did not improve and actually got worse. I concluded I would need to visit my doctor and would need to have it lanced. Oh, joy!
I called the doctor and was able to get an appointment for that day after school. I needed to coordinate pick up of my oldest daughter and also the nap schedule of my younger two girls. Once the appointment was scheduled I began calling for someone to come with me to the office to watch over the girls while I saw the doctor. I was unsuccessful in my attempts, therefore all four of us went to the doctors office together!
As we came into the waiting area we made an impression as my girls spilled their snack, popcorn! I had placed my youngest in the stroller to contain her! I also brought newly borrowed library books to engage them. I must also admit to freely offering a bribe of lollipops to the best behaved. All this was to really no avail.
Once in the examine room, I was asked to put on the "johnny". Upon doing so brought an on-slot of questions from my 5 and almost 4 year old. The doctor arrives and it is obvious he is not thrilled about the audience he will have for this procedure! He takes one look at my back and says, "You have a sebaceous cysts. I will give you novacaine and lance it. I'll give you a prescription for an antibiotic as well."
I am so excited at the thoughts of enduring such a procedure with my three kids with me! My oldest, who is not very quiet, asks, "Mommy, is he going to give you a shot?" "Will it hurt?" "Can I watch?" These questions come a machine gun speed. The doctors moves the stroller and the other two behind the curtain so they can't see mommy getting poked.
I lay down on the bed, face the wall and brace for the shot. He needs to give me an extra shot to fully numb the area. All the while my girls are asking questions and talking to me. Once the procedure is finished they emerge to see me with a large cloth draped over my back as the area still drains. The nurse arrives to bandage the wound. The girls all get to watch and ask many more questions. Oh, just as the doctor got ready to begin my middle daughter announces "I have to go potty."
We are ready to leave the examine room and I am relieved for many reasons! We make our way to the bathroom, one child has had an accident! We are now off to the grocery store to fill my prescription.
They say "It'll be 20 minutes". I plead for it to be done quickly. I purchase bandages and previous mentioned bribes! We wait, we wait, we wait. My girls are now hungry, it is past dinner time and I am past my limit. Finally we are ready to leave.
We are almost to the car, with three screaming people it would have been four if I wouldn't have drawn too much attention to myself. My phone rings....my friend. I don't answer with a "Hi". I answer "THERE IS NOT ENOUGH DRUGS ANYWHERE RIGHT NOW".
The ending of my story does have a happy end. We get home and have a "picnic" (spread a quilt and eat dinner) in the living-room while we watch the first episode of Little House on the Prairie. All is quiet on the home front, and Ma is relieved!
I must say that I draw the line of taking my kids with for any OBGYN visits!!!! |
