I have been doing a little research on the topic of what makes a strong team. A funny thing happened the same scripture verse and the same 4 principles kept coming up. They are:
1. looking for mutual results 2. having a common purpose 3. mutually and equally accountable for the end result 4. Love and grace prevail within the team
Every championship team has all these qualities. they do not pick and choose, this is an all or nothing proposition. lets break each one down and then lets see what the scriptures have to say and see if its biblical sound.
Teams look for mutual results. the best example i can think of is football. there are positions that get more glamor than others. but when it all boils down if the line doesn't do its job the running game and longer passing game is shut down. If the quarterback cant throw or hand off then those skills of the games are shut down. if receivers cant run or rushers cannot plow through the offence cannot be effective. The fact is if one part breaks down the whole team suffers. If one part breaks down there is no synergy things will not happen quickly or at all for that fact with no synergy.
You have to have a common purpose. without a common purpose everyone pulls in different directions. For example today I had several members of my congregation at my house. The guys decided to put together a computer desk and the ladies to cook. Our common purpose was to have a good time void of any arguing and fighting. I have to say we did accomplish this. But what if we hadn't well for the guys the computer desk could of come out looking like a Picasso sculpture and if the ladies hadn't the spaghetti and meat sauce could of been so bad the dog wouldn't of ate it and my dog eats about anything. Great job guys and gals.
Next is we have to be equally accountable for the end result. When a team gets together and does something and it turns out good and positive it is a victory for the team not an individual member of that team. On the same note when a team goes in and fails the team fails the blame should not fall on one member because the team failed not one individual. This is the hard one we call it the hero zero syndrome. See a lot of people swell with pride like their efforts were the reason the team was successful and without their effort the team would of failed, to some extent this is true the team would of failed because they were not working as a team but as individuals. Then the zero complex that is when people single out one member of the team and blame the failure to succeed on that individual or individuals. We need to be all for 1 goal and 1 for all in unity as a group to accomplish the goal. Look at T.E.A.M. as an acronym Together Everyone Achieves More.
Finally Love and grace. I saved this one for last because it is going to be, for some, the hardest. Do everything you do in life with passion. Love your work, your team, your family, and most of all Love your God. If you love what you do and who you do it with God will bless it. If you are a teacher truly Love your class members, If you are on a visitation team love your team and those you are going out to visit with. love the members of your church not only in church but in the community as well. members of our congregation is our family. They are not like family, they are our family. There are things you and your team will attempt and fail at when you do inevitably fail at something then fail with grace. Don't place blame for something that didn't work. Take the knowledge you have from the event and learn and grow from it. Blaming someone else for a team failure robs you of the learning and growing process.
Teams, families, churches, and the body of Christ grows best when you use these principles.
Lets look at the scripture it is Hebrews 10:24-25 10:24 And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: 10:25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some [is]; but exhorting [one another]: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.
I believe this scripture breaks it down for us: Lets be of a common mind and moving constantly towards love and good works by continuing to gather together which is unlike some to keep encouraging one another more and more because the the day is coming near.
lets see does that make the idea of team accomplishment biblical. The answer is yes. here is how
Mutual results - common purpose - Love and grace= let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works equally accountable for the end result Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another This is what makes for a great team We are blessed we have several great teams.
God Bless Chris
