THE KINGDOM OF GOD
Introduction My story began in 1992 when I accepted what Jesus did for me on the cross at Golgotha, while attending a meeting held at the Pretoria Technikon in South Africa by an American preacher who spoke about rock music and its bad influence. It wasn't so much the message that got to me or the fame of the preacher, he wasn't a well know preacher that I know off, even till today I don't know who he is or anything about him. It was his invitation to accept Jesus as Lord and Savior that spoke to me. I have never heard before 'that' day, maybe I did, but I never headed to the knocking of Jesus at the door of my heart except on that day.
I knew that I didn't know Jesus, I knew about Him, but I didn't know Him. I got confronted with what He did for me and couldn't let this opportunity go by. I had to accept what He did for me and prayed a simple sinner’s prayer that very uneventful evening. And immediately I was changed, I could not and did not want to do things I previously did.
All I wanted to do was to learn more about this new life that got birthed in me; I wanted to find out what happened to me, to understand it and to pass it on to my family and the people around me. So I attended every service , and every meeting I could find, went on weekend camps and conferences, bought books, tapes, CD's and DVD's, whatever I could lay my hands on to learn more, to know more.
It seemed like I could never satisfy my hunger and thirst for more of God and knowledge of His Word. I looked to every direction, to every man and woman of God to find and to know more. Even though I found God I still wasn’t satisfied I just knew there must be more. God’s whole purpose for mankind wasn’t just to fellowship with Him and to know Him; He has more in mind for us.
Then one day, a light went on, somebody said something very profound, and all around me I heard people saying "God told me...", "God said...", "The Lord told me...", and I tried to figure out what they meant by saying God told them. Did they go and read the Bible and said things and that that was the way God spoke to them? So I started saying things out of the Bible and said, "God told me...” but that didn't satisfy me, I knew there was something more to it than what I thought.
Then I started to try and find out how to discern the voice of God, and how He speaks to His children. It didn't take long for me to discover that God used my thoughts to speak to me and that I could hear Him. At that time another thing people started saying and was on everybody’s lips in the circles I moved was, "what is your purpose...?", "why are you here...". So the first thing I asked God when I discovered that I could hear Him was, "Why am I here, why am I on this earth? I told God, I know I'm not here on earth primarily to worship Him, because I could die and do that in heaven, so that could not be my primary purpose.
Then God took me to the book of Ephesians chapter 4 and showed me Eph 4:11-13 Eph 4:11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; (emphasis mine) Eph 4:12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: Eph 4:13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ: So I asked God, "So, what does that have to do with me?" And God told me "You are a Teacher, I have called you to be a teacher to the Church." And God showed me right through my life that I had a hunger for knowledge and that I always wanted to share that knowledge with somebody. I almost never enjoyed school, even though I enjoyed Biology, Geography and History. Those subjects fascinated me. I would typically before an exam take a book read it through and go and write the test and just make it by the skin on my bottom.
So God told me that I am a teacher. Then I asked God, "What am I suppose to teach about?" and He answered me, "about the Kingdom of God". So I said OK, without understanding what He said. Then God started explaining to me things about the Kingdom which we will go into later.
I then asked God, "If I am going to teach the Church then I need somebody to teach me." I didn't know that God in His wisdom has already sent the Holy Spirit 2000 years ago for exactly that same purpose that I was asking for. At that stage I was attending bible studies given by Gary Kieswetter at his home on Thursday evenings. (Gary Kieswetter is a teacher primarily to the denominational protestant churches in South Africa, and has an awesome anointed ministry.)
That very next evening when I attended such a bible study at his home, we got to talk together and I told him what I did at that stage and that I had quite a lot of time on my hands, so he asked me to ask the Lord if I could join him on his evenings out when he had to go and minister at other places. I immediately told him that the request was in answer to a prayer of mine and that I already knew that it was the right thing for me to do. I experienced amazing times with Gary as he ministered to people and learned quite a lot of things from his ministry in which I was exposed to for about a year and a half. Gary has an awesome love for God and God's people. He always has an open hand and is well respected and known all over South Africa and has preached on invitation abroad.
As time went on however God exposed me to more and more men and women of God and taught me to have discernment. When to take and when to leave certain teachings. I have an obligation to God and to my fellow brothers and sisters to do and teach what God called me to do, and to do it well. To make sure that I am led by the Spirit and to do what He tells me to, and to love everybody with an uncompromising love.
God told me to teach the Kingdom of God, and everybody who is ministering is not necessary teaching the Kingdom. But that is changing, and I can only run the race set before me and do it to the best of my abilities, by following the leading of the Holy Spirit. Jesus did send us for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.
All I want is to live the Kingdom life and tell people about that life by speaking the truth in love. Hannes Jordaan
Chapter 1
The validity of preaching the Kingdom of God. So God told me that I am a teacher. Then I asked God, "What am I suppose to teach about?" and He answered me, "about the Kingdom of God". So I said “OK”, without understanding what He said. Then God started explaining to me things about the Kingdom.
God took me to Genesis and showed me that when He made man, he gave him dominion. Gen 1:26 And God said; Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. Gen 1:28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.
Here are two power words used in the above mentioned passage: Subdue and Dominion. According to the Collins Concise Dictionary: Subdue means – to overcome and bring under control by force, and Dominion in essence means – the authority to rule.
We can see from this passage that mankind had dominion and the authority to rule over: The fish of the sea, The fowl of the air, The cattle, All the earth, and Over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
But, through man’s sin, he lost the dominion/authority he had. God, in His timeless wisdom already had the answer to the problem that faced mankind: To get back man’s dominion.
God sent John the Baptist, to herald in the return of the kingdom. To make way for the King, to proclaim that the One who would reinstate the kingdom to mankind was to come.
Mat 3:1 In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judea, Mat 3:2 And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
John was talking about Jesus, who would take back the dominion authority that man lost by being obedient unto death and thereby be able to get back what Adam lost through his disobedience (Phi 2:8). John was preparing the people for the coming King and the kingdom. To repent means to change your mind, to think differently. What were the people suppose to think? They had to start thinking the kingdom. Do not think like the world does who are slaves to darkness, but think God’s kingdom stuff.
Jesus started His ministry saying: Mat 4:17 From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. Mat 4:23 And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people. Jesus’ ministry was all about the Kingdom, He laid more emphasis on the Kingdom than on any other subject in all His teachings.
His teachings were about the Kingdom. Mat_4:17,23; Mat_5:3, 10, 19-20; Mat_6:10, 13, 33; Mat_7:21; Mat_8:11-12; Mat_9:35; Mat_10:7; Mat_11:11-12; Mat_12:25-26, 28; Mat_13:11, 19, 24, 31, 33, 38, 41, 43-45, 47, 52; Mat_16:19, 28; Mat_18:1, 3-4, 23; Mat_19:12, 14, 23-24; Mat_20:1, 21; Mat_21:31, 43; Mat_22:2; Mat_23:13; Mat_24:7,14; Mat_25:1, 14, 34; Mat_26:29; Mar_1:14-15; Mar_3:24; Mar_4:11, 26, 30; Mar_6:23; Mar_9:1, 47; Mar_10:14,-15, 23-25; Mar_12:34; Mar_13:8; Mar_14:25; Luk_4:43; Luk_6:20; Luk_7:28; Luk_8:1, 10; Luk_9:2, 11, 27, 60, 62; Luk_10:9, 11; Luk_11:2, 17-18, 20; Luk_12:31-31; Luk_13:18, 20, 28-29; Luk_16:16; Luk_17:20-21; Luk_18:16-17, 24-25, 29; Luk_19:12, 15; Luk_21:10; Luk_21:31; Luk_22:16, 18, 29-306; Joh_3:3, 5; Joh_18:36; Act_1:3. The gospel that Jesus preached was the gospel of the Kingdom.
Mar 1:14 Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, Mar 1:15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel. When Jesus sent out His disciples to go and preach He exhorted them with these words. Mat 10:7 And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand. Mat 10:8 Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give. When Jesus spoke about the end He told the disciples: Mat 24:14 And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.
When Jesus rose from the dead, Luke writes in the book of Acts: Act 1:3 To whom also he showed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God: Philip, one of the Apostles preached the Kingdom: Act 8:12 But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women. Paul, preached the Kingdom: Act 14:22 Confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God. Act 19:8 And he went into the synagogue, and spake boldly for the space of three months, disputing and persuading the things concerning the kingdom of God. Act 20:25 And now, behold, I know that ye all, among whom I have gone preaching the kingdom of God, shall see my face no more. Act 28:23 And when they had appointed him a day, there came many to him into his lodging; to whom he expounded and testified the kingdom of God, persuading them concerning Jesus, both out of the law of Moses, and out of the prophets, from morning till evening. Act 28:31 Preaching the kingdom of God, and teaching those things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ, with all confidence, no man forbidding him.
I was convinced; I didn’t need any convincing anymore. I still had a lot of questions, but my mind was made up. I understood what God wanted, I understood what He wanted me to do. I still didn’t understand how He wanted me to do it, and that is where most of the mistakes I made in my life came from. I stopped listening to the faithful Holy Spirit who would teach me and guide me into all truth. But by the Grace of Almighty God, even where I got sidetracked, God was always there to embrace me. When I stumble, He is always there to put me back on my feet and to show me the Way and He will do the same for you if you will turn to Him. We might take forever to truly fathom the Grace of God, but that shouldn’t stop us from accepting and experiencing that marvelous grace that is accessible to all who wants to accept it.
There are many more scriptures validating the preaching of the Gospel of the Kingdom of God. The true gospel that we should preach is the Gospel of the Kingdom of God. Yes we should preach the Born Again experience, yes we should preach the Baptism in the Holy Spirit, yes we should proclaim Healing in His Name and Prosperity in His Name; but these are all elements of the greater Gospel of the Kingdom of God. To truly understand all those things we should see them all in relation to the Gospel of the Kingdom of God. It is awesome to see ministries rising up all over the world starting to lay emphasis on the Kingdom of God and I pray that as we go deeper into the revelation of this Kingdom message that we shall see the manifestation of the Kingdom Life that beckons us to truly be the Sons of God in word and deed.
Next time we will discuss “the Two Kingdoms”, the kingdom of Darkness and the Kingdom of Light and it promises to be all you imagine it to be, ……Awesome.
