| Don’t Put Yourself In A Position To Be Tempted |
|
| |
I love chocolate. If it is in the house, I tend to eat it. It is too much of a temptation for it to be sitting on the shelf. I swear I hear it calling my name. If I don’t want to be tempted to eat that chocolate, I shouldn’t even bring it into the house.
This may be a trivial way to speak of something a lot more serious, but it gets the point across. Chocolate may not be a sin, eating it may not be a sin, but the temptation is still that, a temptation. You can replace chocolate with any number of things, much more serious things that can be considered sin, like drinking too much alcohol, having an affair, taking illegal drugs, or any sin that you are driven to through temptation.
If you are an alcoholic, and you are on the wagon, the last place you should be is in a bar. You shouldn’t put yourself in a position to be tempted, even if you think you can withstand that temptation…you might be able to fight it off once, or twice, or maybe even a hundred times, but at some point, you may not be able to fight anymore, and you will be drinking again.
If you have had an affair in the past, the last place you need to be is alone with someone of the opposite sex who is not your spouse. The temptation to stray may not be there at first, but the more you put yourself in that position, the more likely you will think that you can get away with it and you will do it.
Whatever your sin is, whatever your Achilles heel is, the thing that is most tempting, the thing that you have the hardest time NOT doing even though you know it is wrong, you need to avoid situations that might lead to that sin, at all costs. Don’t put yourself in a position to be tempted. You might think “I am a Christian now, things are different, I won’t do that horrible thing again, I learned my lesson, God is now in my heart.” That may all be true, and at that point in time you might be sincere, but never say never. Never say that you won’t do that “thing” again. We are human, and satan is constantly trying to get us to stumble, and he knows what it will take to make us stumble. He knows where our Achilles heel is, and how to get to us. Don’t help him out by putting yourselves in situations that will tempt you to do the very thing you said you would never do.
We do have God on our side, and if we put on the full armor of God, we can fight the temptations that threaten us. But so many times, you think you have put on your armor, only to find that you have not. And when your guard is down, that temptation comes, and before you know it, you have stumbled.
I know what my Achilles heel is. I know what gets me, and what could cause me to stumble, and I avoid the situations that put me in danger of stumbling. I have on the full armor of guard, and I try not to let my guard down, but I know I am still human, so I don’t let myself be tempted. And I never say never…instead I say, Lord protect me today from anything that might cause me to fall. He is faithful to us, if we are faithful to Him. He will not let us be tempted without providing a way out. But we have to be in tune with Him, ready to flee from that temptation.
Make sure you know what your Achilles heel is, that sin that causes you to fall…and pray about it, put on the full armor of God to guard against it, and never, ever put yourself into a position to be tempted.

| Sometimes just that arrogant attitude of, I would never do that is our downfall. We are just so sure that we are above this thing that we've decided never to do,we aren't prepared when the temptaion presents itself. We've never thought of ways of escape & we're to caught up in teh temptation to ask God to help deliver us from our temptaion.Great Blog. |

| I think some of us (perhaps especially the males) think we are strong enough to withstand temptation. Others of us know the danger and just think that if we fail God will still forgive. I think the issue is how much we really hate the sin. May we be filled with HATE! |

Excellent biblical teaching and a necessary warning. I could have written that first paragraph as chocolate in the house calls my name, too! |
|

| Deb - this really is awesome advice. All of us should consider ourselves weaklings when it comes to sin....well, ok then I will speak for myself! I'm weak, I need to run from temptation as fast as I can! (like you said) Lingering around temptation is plain foolishness! Not only does that compromise my defenses, but in a way it's testing God too. Thanks for the blog! |

awesome word Deb! well put...and definitely in season! God Bless |

Oh Cheryl! Don't throw your chocolate away. Throw it my way!
Seriously, Deb, great blog. I don't know how many times I've heard young Christians talk about being tempted and falling - all because they were in places that led them to be tempted. We can all be witnesses and share our faith but it's not the same thing as walking into the lion's pit.
Thanks for bringing up this important concept of faith. |

| Deb, great blog and great reminder. Recently, I went on a diet. It has been about 3 months and I have lost 35 pounds. To do this required me to throw away all the fattening stuff and resolve to only buy healthy or relatively healthy food. The temptations had to go! Great advice! |

Juan, just saying "first comment" isn't really comment :)
racunpoodle, yep, some can be arrogant and think they won't possibly ever do that thing again...dare I even say judgemental of others caught in the same sin?
Doyle Crowe, God is the right thing to be addicted to!
Cheryl, thank you...don't throw all the chocolate away...it is to good to go to waste! lol
Steve, I agree...being filled with hate for the sin. That will help us to not do it...and I think that when God changes a person's heart from the inside, that they do hate the sin they committed.
Jay, isn't it horrible being addicted to chocolate? It is a love/hate relationship with me. I love to eat it, but I hate what it does to me. lol
restore, yes, the Holy Spirit does guide our steps...may we be wise enough to listen to Him!

Mike, thank you...put on your racing shoes and flee that temptation!
Minister Ayanna, thank you and God Bless you too!
jairah20, I love that biblical quote from Ephesians. There are so many spiritual battles going on, and some we have no knowledge of.
Gene, you are so right. We can't be expected to fight temptation if we continually put ourselves in positions that will cause us to fall. Young kids, and really anyone of any age, should remember to get as far away from the tempation as possible.
Pastor Tim, Maybe I should start shopping at groceries stores that have only healthy foods...I see the chocolate and have to pick it up...like I said, it calls my name...seriously, I am glad that you have lost 35 pounds!!! That is awesome! Keep up the good work! |

So Deb has talking chocolate at her house..."Come OUT!!"
On a more serious note, this is an awesome reminder of our inability to fight on our own. If God tells me to go to that place of temptation, I go because I have prayed that He would not lead me into temptation. If He doesn't, though, I run - just like Mike said.
Great post Deb. |

Deb, You've done it again!!! :) A wonderful blog!
Your statement, "This may be a trivial way to speak of something a lot more serious, but it gets the point across." certainly is true--it does get the point across. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure! I always look forward to your blogs, Deb. |

DC, You mean you don't have any talking chocolate at your house? I thought that was commonplace! lol Seriously, I thank you for your comments and glad you liked the post.
ds13099, God does have a way of handing us what we need, even if we don't think we need it, doesn't He? lol
Yahschild, Thank you for your kind comments...to God be the glory! |

| Yep, this is using wisdom! I was reading the Word today, and it really jumped out at me this time when Jesus told Peter and the others, when they fell asleep (twice) to pray that they don't fall into temptation. i guess that's why it is good to pray "Lead us not into temptation." I prayed that for me and my hubby today. Awesome blog again. |

Lara, thank you. I really do think that the evil forces of this world are constantly trying to find things that will trip us up, and we must pray every day for strength to fight the temptations that come our way. God will help us if we ask.
Cheryl, don't send all the chocolate to Gene...send some my way too! lol |
