| If MyChurch Had Webcams |
|
| |

If this were a MyChurch cartoon, what might the dialogue be?
What if MyChurch had webcams? Do we live in such a way that there is no need for pretense? Would our MyChurch friends recognize us if they watched our lives? Does God honor pretentiousness if it is in His name? Do we read His Word and pray as often we type about reading His Word and praying?
Disclaimer: Any resemblance in the above picture to any actual MyChurch member is unintentional! :)
32:2 Blessed is the man to whom the LORD imputes no iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no deceit. |

Kathy, why do you always gotta stir things up?
lol, just kidding.
Ok, so I guess there are could be some pretentiousness here. But I feel like you can tell by the "tone" of the writing where people are at with God. I also sort of see a greater degree of truthfulness in people when they communicate across the net...like people sense a greater degree of freedom to reveal things about themselves they wouldn't ordinarily tell people in person. Studies have shown this too. |

On a funny note first.... webcams!!! That would be scary! I can now sit down and read and/or write blogs, read memos and/or write memos at any given time but, with webcab I would have to dress and apply makeup first. Sorry the vision just struck me funny! Do I pray and read my Bible often enough I wish I could say yes but I would have to say No. I say prayers all day but to really humble myself to the Lord it's just not done enough. I read scriptures but to sit down and truly read and study His Word not enough! |

Mike, we must have been commenting at the same time... You must type faster then me. I had to comment on the truthfulness part. You are right! I know for myself I have revealed things that I most likely would have kept to myself or told a little less in person. |

If it was late at night and you saw Jen on a webcam, you'd see the afro her hair had turned into after she "combed" it with her fingers. Scary! :-o I agree with Mike re:what people reveal about themselves. I've always loved to write (letters, etc.), and I'm much more forthcoming in what I write than in what I'm willing to vocalize. Gotta love those bunny slippers... |

Kathy, I like what Apodemeo said: If anyone is to herald the banner of truth high it should be us.
Great point!
I took out the rollers and took off my bunny slippers {just in case} AND don't want to be caught like that when the rapture happens!!! lol!!! |

Cheryl, I didn't recognize you. If I had known my pic was going to show here, I would have had my striped boxers on instead of polka dots!!
Kathy, webcams are interesting...I think Joey just installed one...and we discussed what it might be like if we forgot it was on...kinda scary actually.
As far as pretentiousness (where did that word come from?), I think we all have a facade of sorts that we like to hide behind. I have learned that those who really love you will see behind the facade at times, get a glimpse, and still love you. However, I think to pretend to be someone you aren't is a different story. I know some people do that. My question would be: why? Why would they want to do that? Maybe there might be a "good" reason, but I can't think of one.
Once again, you have me thinking...you do that to me a lot!! |

Once I had a conversation with another MyChurch member for a half an hour in my PJ's before I realized my webcam was on! Now I turn it upside down and stand it up when I know I am ready for the other person to see who is on the other end :) |

Kathy, your blog reminded me of an episode of the Jetsons I loved. The family has just rolled out of bed and started to eat breakfast when their camera phone thingy rings. It is the kind of phone where you can see each other, like everyone in the future has. It's for the mom (Judy Jetson?), but she still has rollers in her hair and no makeup on. She quickly puts a mask on that looks just like her when she is made up at her best and takes the call. While she and the woman she is talking to are putting on airs with each other, the woman speaking to her sneezes. You guessed it, she sneezes her own "pretty" mask right off her face. She ends up looking straight into the camera with rollers in her hair, no makeup and completely mortified.
What a waste of time. Let's save ourselves the embarassment of our masks slipping off and just show up as our very real, roller-adorned and makeup-less selves. Thanks for reminding us to keep it real!

Whew! I'm glad Voice claimed the photo first. I was afraid I'd be recognized!

Hmm boxers on......wow. I hadn't thought about that, lolrof.......... Anonymity levels the playing field in wonderful ways. I don;t have to worry if I shaved, washed my face or put on nice clothes! I think it cute through our prejudices and allows us to see each other as person. Anyway love the picture Kathy, a, hem, haw, sexy slippers for a single girl......HAHAH. Mike, sometimes the anonymity of the internet does indeed bring a freedom to share things we might not otherwise share. I think, at least in my case, a large part of that is that it affords me the opportunity. When we see each other once a week at church, or in the hallway at work, it is difficult to ever move beyond the "fine, how are you" stage. We all want to be seen and heard, and, in my opinion, that is the greatest potential of MyChurch. The opportunity to communicate with our churches on a deeper level, and enhance our church relationships. And although the reality is that most of us don't really care to know what kind of bedroom slippers the people in our church wear, or what kind of day they all had at the office, MyChurch offers an unintrusive way of sharing that doesn't require that anyone listens if they don't want to!
Cheryl from GA, lol. I agree! I suspect I would be on MyChurch a lot less if everyone could see me!
Cheryl from OK, someone on another site posted the picture, and I knew I had to share it! I wish I knew where it originated.
JesusFreak, I'm glad you got a laugh! I did too!

Apodemeo, me parece que conprendiste lo que yo estaba pensando cuando escribí este blog. ¡Somos hermanos! Escribiste "If anyone is to herald the banner of truth High it should be us, no?" Sí, Apodemeo, ¡Amen!
Cheryl, the rapture might catch many of us in curlers and bunny slippers, but I won't hesitate to go! :)
Voice, several years ago I bought a webcam, but my computer crashed the day I connected it, and I was never brave enough to try it again! I like your distinction between our masks and our pretense. It seems a natural part of life to protect parts of ourselves from others' view, especially for those of us who are naturally more reserved. But another thing entirely to pretend to be something we are not. Why do people do this, you asked. I think it is for acceptance. If life has somehow taught us that we will not be loved and accepted, we want to find that acceptance however we can, and the anonymity of the internet makes that a bit easier. We can be models and Chippendale dancers. We can be SuperChristians. We can know and experience things that nobody else has ever experienced . . . but as Mike pointed out, there will be those who will be able to see through all our pretenses, and as you said, even our facades. To see through someone's mask may bring us closer. To see through someone's pretense is likely to scar or destroy the relationship. IMO.
Thanks, Doyle!

Soozanne, "keep it real!" Yes, that's the shout of this post! We will love you here if we know you! BTW, I love you, Sooze! And I loved the Jetsons too!
Gene, I agree we are all a little different based on circumstances and even on who we are with. This is our nature and not pretentiousness. Pretentiousness is trying to give the impression we are someone that we are not. Like "I spend 5 hours every morning praying," or "I did years of research and read 10 books for this blog," . . . You, Gene, are real! :)
Hi Megan! Scary indeed, for me too!

Hello Miss Kathy,
My name is Larry, and from the looks of it I don't know whether or not took take this as a serious discussion or if its just for laughs considering all the comments you gotten. More than likely these are good friends of yours and would imagine that you are a a God fearing Christian. Anyway I thougth I would just comment on your blog, which I find as someting that crosses everybodies mind from time to time. Webcams? Well thank God for the blood that his Son shed without it we would be in a world of mess. Anyhow, whether or not we are being exposed on a web cam should not effect us in our duties as christians. I mean It says not to judge and also to remove the plank from our own eyes before we try to remove the splinter out of our friends eye. Also that we are love to everybody including our enemies. Perfection? Never, just an everyday attempt to be more Christlike. Besides at the end Gods not going to ask are friends and family how well we did in His service. Why would He? If the only webcam we have to worry about is the one He has on us. Mercy and compassion saved us from our sins. I wish I could do better on some days, but the good thing is that for us The joy comes in the morning. Sorry If I over did it, I just believe that we each know how deep our relationship with Christ is. Thanks for that intersting Blog. God Bless.. |

Cheryl, lol. Since this is a blog about being real, I thought I should come clean! Perhaps I should also confess that I sometimes squeeze the toothpaste from the top! The socks? No, not knee socks, although knee socks might feel good today!
Torres, excellent point! This blog is definitely not meant to encourage us to judge each other, and you are right that it is meant to be both light-hearted and serious. My purpose in posting it was two-fold: 1) that we might examine ourselves; and 2) that we might be mindful that even Christian communities are not immune to scams, and actually we tend to be more vulnerable to scams than most communities, because we are so trusting and feel so safe. Although there are undoubtedly many legitimate causes on MyChurch, this kind of community can also be a breeding ground for predators, who type "I love Jesus" (or orphans, or homeless people . . .) and then ask for our money. Everyone gives according to their own conscience, but personally I don't give to any cause I am not already familiar with, unless I check it out very carefully, and I don't have the time (or the ability) to check out every one that comes across my mail. There are so many legitimate organizations that help the world's children, or world hunger, or the spreading of the Gospel, that I can give to these causes without sending my money blindly. So no judgment is intended here, just self-examination, and carefulness. Thank you for raising such an important point, Torres, and welcome to MyChurch! |

Kathy, I want to add a note to all, if I may...As you know from my testimony, that due to a Domestic Violence situation I had to flee from my marriage of 15 yrs which lead me and my child to being homeless for 3-4 months at a shelter. I WHOLEHEARTLY agree with what you are saying~I first-hand saw the abuses you listed with people taking advantage and asking for money, pulling a 'sympathy card', being predators in many forms. There are so many places/organizations to help, I know the tough hard road of praying for my meals, God always supplied and one has to look ahead and make good choices. I knew at 7pm we would need to eat and planned on that for some time ahead to the best of my ability/circumstances. I would agree to ONLY lead people to resources. Sometime there are 'rules' that are not really logical, like no food after a certain time but you just arrived (maybe from work, a real reason) and so you need to eat. I can help with resource ideas/organization names if needed if someone has a question. Thanks~ |

Thank you, Cheryl. Although I haven't personally seen homeless people on MyChurch asking for help for themselves, I have seen many "ministries" (some of which are legitimate I'm sure, but how can we tell which ones) asking for money to help the homeless, or orphans, or to spread the Gospel in some particular country . . . Your experience is a testimony to God's provision in our lives. PTL He protected you and your children!
I volunteer occasionally in our local shelter, and we close the kitchen at a certain hour. However, if we are expecting guests who are arriving late from their work, we prepare a plate for them for when they arrive. |

I also prefer the apparent more honesty in this site much more than the superficiality in church and elsewhere. I only used a webcam a few times, and not for anything sinful. If we were forced to use one in order to be in this site, I would probably do so, but I would not change what I normally wear (usually the same shirt and pants for the whole week and I would not shave every day. But true Christians should be truthful all of the time, so my communicating would not change. Also remember God is eveywhere and all knowing, and we should only be saying and doing things that we wouldn't mind being said and done to us. Also disciples of Jesus Christ should not be striving to be popular or famous; they should be just doing whatever the Holy Spirit urges as they do their part for the Great Commission being good examples of Christ-likeness. BTW, the cartoon almost turned me off to reading the blog. |

Amen, Cathy! If I don't like who I am I will work at changing myself, but I won't pretend to be something different.
Carol, aw, Lambchops! Do you wear these? In addition to my bunny slippers, I have a pair of cute penguin slippers, but they don't get much wear.
Bill, I apologize if the picture was offensive. It was not my intent to offend, but rather to share a laugh and to make us think just a little. As you point out, webcams are not inherently bad, and I didn't intend to give that impression. Webcams can be used for good or bad, just as anything else on the internet (or off). Thank you, Bill, for your thoughts!
Lara, your post made me laugh. Several months ago an on-line friend called me, and from that point on, she couldn't send me a message without referring to my Southern accent! I guess it doesn't come across in the blogs! :) |

Yeah, I have to agree with Jess...I am now ruined from commenting but only momentarily.
I am better now. If churches had webcams...i think we would be embarrassed in nose picking alone. It is quite humorous from the pulput sometimes, other times it is quite sad. People are horrible at controling facial expressions and the really interesting thing is they usually thing they are a master of the trait. Me included. |

| Patrick, that would make an interesting blog! What kinds of expressions do you see people hiding? I know I try to disguise a yawn occasionally, quite unsuccessfully I'm sure! |
|
|

 |
|
|
Oh various from the artful disguise of a yawn (never successful) to the even more artful disguise of "did anyone see me nod off?" (even more unsuccessful) to downright sinful glances and so on...you can be imaginative. I try to leave all that in God's hand. Though I definitely am a performer at heart, I really try to make sure I am not pruposefully creating events that will hopefully drive emotional responses but instead allow peoples responses to be as genuinely to the Lord as possible. Not to say I don't have emotion, but I make sure it is in response to Him and not for a performnce to the congregation.
I don't see too much sleeping anyways...but people are tired when they show up and when tired people rest during your ministering to them, that can be a real good compliment. Some people are too stressed to rest and when they hear your words...or better when they hear God's words through you, they can enter into His rest and that will have a physical manifestation. I know I am not boring so if I see someone sleeping, I let that person sleep. They might not have had a good rest in days...weeks.
If I know the person well, I bust him out though. It is funny |

| I doubt if many could be found for who they are. It seems like 'real' friendships are even more difficult to develop in the church than they are in the workplace. If you don't paste that slimey I'ma a happy Christian smile on then you got problems, and if you do got problems you get a cliche or a pat answer. No one wants to become your friend if it might involve some time. See ya next service be blessed, no go home to your solituded, while you contemplate if life really is worth living. That my friend is the actuality of the Christian life...... |

Funny, Patrick. Yeah, I've seen the nodding off, and "did anyone see me nod off?"
Zaphenath, thank you for your comment, and welcome to MyChurch. As sad as your comment is, I wish I could dismiss it, but there is a lot of truth in it. We are all so busy, that we are not able to genuinely care about every other person. We can be polite to them and offer them an encouraging word, which may or may not encourage, and we can pray a quick prayer, which may or may not be heartfelt enough to be heard. But true love for each other is a rare treasure. May we hear your words and seek to be more genuine and more loving. May we seek to throw away our platitudes and pat answers that often condescend more than they help. May we seek to forego our words in exchange for something more heartfelt, like our presence, our listening ear, our hugs, our tears, our wrenching prayers. May we give up the deceived notion that speaking our Christianese is the same as showing real care and making a positive difference in the lives of those around us. Thank you, Zaphenath! |

Hey Zaph, I can't leave that alone either...that IS NOT the Christian life...that is the attititude and response of people who just don't get it...and on both sides. That is the result of failed discipleship, communication, leadership, etc on both sides of the conversation. I have told people who give me that response (kindly and patienly) not to do that with me. Care or don't, don't go through motions with me. It is strange to me that this is the only view you have taken from you church attendance b/c I can testify of many churches that are welcoming and warm and really stress relationships, genuine relationships, as one of their major key fundamentals.
Many people need to be taught HOW to be in relationships...b/c in the world, which seems ot be the standard for many, usually they are built on "what can you give me" attitudes or they are "professional" or even merely "we are stuck together might as well be friendly." But Jesus taught us to love..love goes beyond dismissing pain with a cliche...
There is way to much teaching that I hear out in Christian land that tells people that if they speak Christianese that is somehow faith but if they admit weakness or need that is a lack of it. On Sunday morning we have to say "blessed" when asked how we are doing else we are not good Christians...I have heard it taught.
But there are a great many Christians out there that understand love and really enjoy genuine fellowship...I suggest that you first lay down your shield b/c you have to be willing to be vulnerable to being hurt to even have a relationship and either look for a congregation where organized home meetings are a part of their weekly norm and maybe start asking those questions like "how are you blessed?" or even "are you going to have a real conversation with me or are you wanting me to leave you alone?" which I have used before...just be wise with that one.. |

Thanks, Valarie! We need sound files here, don't we?
Thank you, Patrick! Good words! Amidst all the hurried and careless interaction, there are definitely people who reflect the love of Christ for all people! |

[star!] | Kathy and friends - I have laughed so hard and really needed it. Webcams, huh! really interesting, however I cannot let you people see me in my husbands very, very old PJ's that are too large and I refuse to give up.
I think that people reveal more of themselves through writing than a one-on-one situation. Wonderful idea..
Love ya Sis |

Cindy Lou just posted a blog on someone who disappeared with many people's money and this morning, I came back to this blog and in reading the comments I had to copy your comment which I find very interesting that I would come across this. I was not looking for it but G-d has a way of revealing stuff to His children to insure our protection and to open our eyes to the world. This is so sad. |
