| Bay meets Jeep. Jeep wins. |

First let me say that so far Bay is doing OK. He is badly scraped, cut, and bruised. He doesn't have the energy he normally has. So far, though, he seems to be recovering.
This morning started like any "typical" Sunday morning. Any of you who have kids or have had kids know what I mean by "typical". After showering and getting dressed, I rewoke the kids (Sword had already given them their wake up call), then took Bay out for our regular morning walk in the woods. It was a cool morning and the sound of the birds in the woods was overwhelming. When we returned home, we had breakfast. I made Bay a mix of old hamburger helper, some dried up chicken, a fresh can of soup, and some dog chow with vitamins. He was never so happy.
We had an extra child this weekend. One of our daughter's friends had spent the day with us on Saturday, spent the night, and was going with us to church. They were getting ready just fine. However, my youngest son was having some real difficulty with the extra person in the family routine. As many of you know he is autistic. Changing the routine is difficult for him, although it is something he needs to learn. He was screaming very loudly about how someone was sitting at his place at the table (or something like that) and my wife sent him out in the front yard just to get him out of the situation for a bit - a "time out" of sorts. He took Bay with him. They make a good partnership. Bay is really watchful of Ryan and they play together really well.
A few moments later we heard Bay yelping and Ryan came into the house crying that Bay had been hit by a car.
One of the problems of living on a dirt road is that it is really hard not to play and walk in the dirt road. While there is a sense of where our yard ends, it isn't a distinct line. Another problem of living on a dirt road is that people drive too fast and don't slow down when they should. The guy driving the Jeep never stopped.
Not really grasping what had been going on, we were paying attention to Ryan. He was soooo sorry and described how Bay had rolled several times after the car had hit him. When I finally realized that Ryan was OK, I found Bay curled up right beside my desk. Bay was very scared. When I called for him to come downstairs he did. We all sat around him for a while to help him settle down. When he did, we took a look at his cuts and bruises. They didn't seem to be very bad. The bleeding had stopped. He had a bad scrape under his chin - much like a kid who had fallen off his bike, and a couple of gashes on his jaw and leg.
After spending some time with him, Bay seem to be settling down well. Within less than an hour, we started to see the Bay we all knew coming back around. He seem to be a little slow, but still responding well to our teasing, brushing, and playing - even though we were doing it very lightly with him.
We went to church and did our normal Sunday routine. After taking our daughter's friend home, we came home to find Bay standing at the fence waiting for us - just like a "typical" Sunday. Kelly and I took him for a walk in the woods. He didn't want to leave our side at all. Bay seemed very content just to be walking with us.
Bay is right now sitting here by my desk eating a pig ear. I think he will be OK, but we sure had a scare this morning.
Not your "typical" Sunday for a man, his dog, and his God. |

| Oh, Voice. Having a dog hurt is almost like having one of your kids injured. I am so sorry but hope and pray that there is no permanent damage and that Bay will heal up "good as new." Love and peace to you and yours. |

Thanks everyone.
Bay is still in pain. He growls at himself every now and then - kinda like me, I guess. I am very confident he is just bruised and scraped now.
This morning when we went for our walk he was eager to get outside, then settled in behind me (he usually runs way ahead of me). We will take it easy for a few days and see how he does.
It was a scary morning on Sunday for us.
If you would, also keep our son Ryan in prayer. During prayers last night he asked God to take away the guilty feeling that it was his fault that Bay was hit. While I think it is good for him to understand his responsibility for taking care of Bay, he doesn't need to be carrying guilt with him. |

Bless your hearts... I'm glad Ryan said that prayer; what a wise little guy who is feeling such remorse. I can't tell you how badly I feel for all of you. It will take a little time for Bay to bounce back; for all of you. You are in my prayers. I thank God that you are a family who prays and loves God. God loves each of you and you know it. |

Took Bay to the vet last night. We could tell he was in a lot of pain - both from sore muscles and from the scabbing on his chin. Vet gave him some pain killer and some antibiotics, but overall said he looked good. Bay was so good at the vet. Only time he was upset is when they were trying to clean the scrapes with an alcohol wipe. He didn't like that. We won't be taking him to the beach this weekend. Needs to stay out of the water for a week or so.
Thanks for all your concerns... |

Hey Voice, I am very glad things are getting better for Bay. How is Ryan doing with the whole process? I hope he is not blaming himself. Anyway I pray for healing and grace for Ryan. peace |

Cathy, pig ears are Bay's favorite treat. He always gets one when we come back in from a walk. Sometimes he will chew on it for hours...other times, it is gone in just a couple of minutes. He likes to take it, throw it up in the air and then chase after it.
This morning we went on our normal morning walk. Bay is almost back to normal. He ran out in the woods chasing after some birds. I took him to the bus stop with me today and he enjoyed the time with the kids a lot. He still growls at cars, though, so I think I need to work with him on that.
We know who hit him. We aren't sure what to do about it though....short of sending my ninja wife in to round house kick him.
Ryan seems to be dealing with it ok, too, but he is hard to read. He holds the emotions in and they come out only when they are drawn out or when he blurts them out unexpectedly. Certainly don't see any depression at this point.
Thanks for all of your concerns.

| Voice, I am a big fan of subtly. For example, next time the jeep dude drives past your place you could stand right next to the road pointing a radar gun at him. If he's perceptive, he might realize he's going too fast. |

How about leaving dog biscuits by his mail box. Do you think he'll get the clue? |

| Gene, unfortunately we have no mailboxes out here...Postal Service doesn't deliver this far out. |

Oh well. Maybe just a small box by the driveway. Include a small note that comes from Bay saying, "I wanted to let you know that I forgive you for the accident but that my owners are having a harder time with forgiveness. It might have been easier if you had stopped and talked with him." Put the dog biscuits in as a peace offering and sign it with a paw print.
Still, I'm glad that Bay seems to be OK and is healing. |

| I am so glad that he is ok...I missed this when you posted it. Glad to have caught it now. I hit a dog once...he ran out in front of me and there was a car coming the other way, and I couldn't swerve...I did go back and went to the house where the owners were. He was ok, but I felt horrible. I can't imagine not stopping. |

| Thanks Deb. I have never hit a dog, but it would ruin my day, too. He is getting better with every day. He is right now at the stage where he feels good enough to run and play, but he keeps ripping the scars open.
No beach this weekend. Bummer. However, we will spend some time in the woods and along the creeks. |
