#9 alone should shake us!  Although I don't believe tithing is a NT mandate, I believe it is an excellent practice that supports the kingdom of God and the local church, both for which I care deeply!  I choose to tithe only to causes that directly proclaim the Gospel of Jesus.  Then any other charities I give to (United Way, National MS Society, etc.) are above my tithe amount.  Whether or not we believe the tithe is mandated, surely we all want to give back to God what He has entrusted to us.  Much of Jesus' teaching was about sharing with those in need, and He always did it with a spiritual message.

The blessing of the tithe !   Much has been said about it..........like it's a bad thing !   I believe it is one of the greatest all around (source of) blessings available to Christians.   It's not just about money..........it's about so much more...........
PT, thanks for the statistics.......

PT, you are bringin me down, man! We should be ashamed!!! It really makes me sad when American Christians complain about tithing, a piddly 10%, given the wretched state of much of the rest of the world. I'll simply quote John for the rest of my comment...

This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers. If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him? Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth.

Ummm...  Tithing I sometimes struggle with the joyfull part.  Able pleased god by bringing his first fruits.  We are only giving back a tenth of what he blessed us with.  Mike has a real word there from John.  I really apreciate this post.  I was talking to some fellow Christians at Arby;s about that last night.  I used to dutifully take my tithes to my home Church Wednesdays as it is payday.  But I think now I'm going to start doing it on Sundays then I can do it after praise and worship then I in a better spirit.

Thanks for the post Pastor Tim.

Paul - I agree it is about more than just money. It is also being stewards of our time and talents as well. Good word brother!

Mike, I agree that looking at the info that I gave is depressing. Yet, at the same time the information that I shared can be uplifting because the resources that are needed to reach the world for Christ are already in the Church. PTL!

It's a bummer that so many people think of tithing outside of the church as 'where those televangelists take some old woman's money'.

But it's really is the multiplication of the fishes and the loaves in our midst!

It's something as a fairly new Christian that I believe strongly in - maybe because I belong to a small church and I know exactly how and where it goes - but it's also why I"m praying I start making money again, because 10% of zip is tough to tithe on!

:)

Lara, I agree :-)

Growing in Faith - You made a very important point. You said that you give freely because you kno where your money goes. Research shows this to be true.

I will be praying that God will find you a job! :-)

Deb and A2J, I got it from my denominational leaders. Below is a clip. It is about three minutes into the clip.

"6. American Christians spend $2.9 dollars on foreign missions."

Did you type that right?  Is that per-person or total for America?  It seems like there should be a "million" or "billion" in there somewhere, because $2.90 is only enough for, like, three sodas for the whole year, and $2.90 x 9 = $26.10 is enough for, like, three fast-food dinners.

"9. If all Christians were put on welfare and tithed their welfare check, the money available for ministry would increase by 30%"

Is this "all Christians in the world"?  Because I think a significant percentage of Christians in the world ARE on welfare, so the calculated impact will be less.

I tithe 10% plus a little bit more for random donations.  Had I not tithed, I would have been able to afford to re-shingle my 22-year-old roof, but the old roof remains.  I'm praying to God that it does not leak before I get enough money to re-shingle the roof, and I'm praying to God that I can save enough this year to do it, because if I don't, that money I saved is going to this year's tithe again.  (I tithe once a year; I'm not sure I can recommend that strategy to others.)  Tithing is helping me to put my trust in the Lord and to rely less on myself.

   Dear Pastor Tim,
What we need is a Conviction that He Has Called Us To Complete the Work He Began, many do start as On Fire but Gradually get Cold and Burn Out, some Loose the Anointing because of the PRICE TO PAY[ Leave all and Follow], some others because there is no One that can Support the Effort.
We in INDIA MOST OFTEN FALL IN THE 2'nd Category, we have no Resources.
Kindly Pray for us...we need a Miracle to Complete our Church Building.
in Him, Rev. Dr. Leslie Pinto.     www.worldourvision.org.

Hey Pastor Tim, thanks for starting a good blog!
Those are surprising stat's. this is not on the main theme, but I am looking for wisdom.
I've got some issues with the tithe I hope you can help me with.

   1) If the congregation is encouraged "to Pay your tithe, and Give your offerings" is that  correct?

   2) If a person is behind in their payments that are due, would not paying the tithe be giving away someone else's money? (not planning your income/vs/outgo is not the topic, what about if you loose your job? should I still feel I must pay a tithe if I'm not making the same money?)

I'm a giver, and I would love to be able to give away 99% of my income and live within the national average on the remainder.
I think Paul never mentioned the tithe, because he did not want anyone getting under the law again.
He did suggest setting aside a little each week, so when they come to collect an offering , the people would not be burdened by not having anything saved up.
I would love to see a box put on the wall,( with the ness. secure measures to keep the offering in the box) and announcements made for the needs of the church, and prayer to have the needs met, and cash only in the box, "not knowing what your left hand is doing from your right hand" no receipts, no tax write offs or anything, just give it away! And no plate to pass!
I sometimes work in jail ministries, and one of the big complaints I hear is the "passing the plate"  and "they are just after your money"  comments. I would like to see those stumbling blocks removed as much as possible.   Thank you ahead of time for your help :)
