One of the things I love about the word of GOD is, it's a multi-tasker. It is comforting, it is instructional, it is prophetic, it is a cypher, it is a storybook, it is a lot of short letters, and it is the greatest story ever told. It covers future, past and present. It describes the nature of GOD, man and the world. It is so simple a child can understand it and there are biblical scholars that spend a lifetime revealing it's depths and complexities. It was written by several and edited by one. The authors often lived several hundred years apart, yet the 66 books continually cross reference themselves, as if each was just a separate chapter from the same author. It's existence defies reason and often human logic, and yet it's existence has shaped the world and leads millions of people thousands of years after it was completed. It has been translated into almost every language spoken and has several different translations within each of those languages and yet its content and spirit remain intact as it crosses geographical and cultural lines. Only GOD. The fact that the bible exist is proof that there is a GOD. No man has ever created anything so universal and timeless. And guess what... It doesn't take up several volumes filling up several bookcases. I don't have to go the the Smithsonian, library of congress, or the crypts of some distant order of monks to read it. It fits in my hand, I can take it with me anywhere, I can download scripture from the Internet or have it read to me over the radio and television. I can buy a nice one for $15.00 or get one for free from most churches. He has made it available to us in every conceivable way.
Now, all that means, is that he must really want us to read it continually. Because as we continually read we find that it's not so much a search for that one story or character that you can relate to. The broad familiarity with both old and new testament teaches us that every character in the bible is teaching us. That most of the men and women that he highlights are us. Adam reflects my conflicting love for and turning from Him. Job reminds me that trouble does not mean He is not with me. Johna is me when I am avoiding the calling that frightens me. David shows how we are loved and elevated even in our broken state. Ruth teaches me to be obedient and accept wisdom of elders. Mathew and the boys give the world hope in the story of the birth and death of our lord and the Epistles are lessons for every living being about their personal relationship with GOD. I need to keep these words in front of myself at all times. He is trying to guide us at every moment. When we aren't locked in conversation with him, we always have his word before us to clearly light our path. It is the greatest gift he has ever given us. So great the it became flesh.....
So when I'm sinnin' and feeling separated you can call me David.
When I'm going through and believing beyond reason that he is with me you can call me Job.
When I'm sharing a word and I'm not sure how it's gonna go over, you can call me Johna.
When I'm spreadin' the word, but constantly fighting, encouraging others while admonishing myself you can even call me Peter, Paul or Simon.....
But you doesn't have to call me Johnson.
