Black Heritage Sunday

This Sunday we celebrate Black Heritage with a service led by Edgar Hayes and the staff at Freedom Farm. It will be a wonderful service reminding us both of the past and give us a glimpse of both the present and the future as we look at the mission of Freedom Farm.

The 8:30am and 11:00am services will see Edgar speaking and showing a video presentation. The 9:30am service will include a panel discussion with seven participants: Edgar Hayes - (into. and link to Black Heritage Sunday), Chris Putnam, Ben Rader, Julie Vreeland (neighbor in ministry), Jim Eggleton, Dawn Rojas, and Tyler Gibbs.

For those not well aquainted the namesake of "Freedom Farm" it might well be good to look over this article on "Freedom Summer" the effort in 1964 to enroll as many African Americans to vote as possible in Mississippi that led unfortunetly to the deaths of James Chaney (a black volunteer from Mississippi) and Michael Schwerner and Andrew Goodman (two Jewish volunteers from New York) who were abducted, tortured and killed by Klansmen from Philadelphia, Mississippi. The volunteers' badly beaten bodies were found several months later buried in an earthen dam. This and other violence such as church burnings reinforced local black fear that they would be victims of violence if they registered to vote. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freedom_Summer 

We as faithful apprentices to Jesus Christ understand that all God's people stand before him equally. We confess both our failure to be good brothers and sisters to siblings of color and our need to continue learning the truth so it can set us free.

So once again this Sunday, we celebrate, we learn, we grive, we love, as we participate in Black heritage Sunday.

The events coming up on Sunday sound great.  Also, after the 11am service we will have a tasting of various foods including collard greens, ham and beans, macaroni and cheese and cornbread to name a few.  We are looking for more donations of foods so if you would like to share a dish that you grew up on or that has meaning to your family history or just anything at all please bring it to share.

I'm going to miss this awesome reception.  We had such a good selection of foods last year.  We should consider sharing in and enjoying each other's diversity more often during the year.  Have fun!

It says, "Dear Worship Leaders and Assistants,
The ERT has asked for a Sunday to recognize their volunters. I think this is a great idea. I suggested May 18th, the one between Mother's Day/Pentecost and memorial Day weekend. But it got me thinking. What other special Sundays do we have planned and what ones do we need to plan: Baccalaureate Sunday, Sunday School Closing, etc. I was also wondering if we could look into the future and plan some special Sundays not on the calendar and invite leadership from the congregation. One was a day to celebrate the Spanish speaking part of our family, maybe looking towards Cinco de Mayo, teaching the congregation a hymn or two in Spanish; the other an Asian celebration (Kap is Korean), learning a hymn or two in Korean or even later Chinese or Hindi (Lyla ten Eyck is Indian).
