Dead
Ephesians chapter 2 begins with "And you were dead in your tresspasses and sins..." That little verse says everything we need to know about our standing with God before He saved us. I was dead. Completely vile in my willingness to live according to the "prince of the power of the air", and to fulfill the evil desires of my flesh. I was living as a child of wrath. Whose wrath? God's! The only thing I deserved was hell!
Grace
"But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved)." Grace has been defined as "unmerited favor" and I think that is a pretty good description of what God is saying in these verses. I i nothing to make me worthy of salvation. If anything, I would have excluded myself by my actions or even inaction. God loved me while I was still under His wrath. What an amazing thing it is to experience the grace of God! Now I'm alive!
Alive
What does it mean that God has made me alive with Christ? It, at the very least, implies that I also died with Christ. As Paul said elsewhere, "I have been crucified with Christ and yet I live." Being raised with Christ has given us great treasures of grace that we could never deserve..."seated us with Him in the heavenly places..." God has done everything for us. We could never do anything to deserve a seat in the heavenly places. God is showing us the "surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus." God's love and grace is absolutely amazing. |
