15:15 No longer do I call you servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I heard from my Father, I have made known unto you. This morning, I am trying to wrap my mind around that truth.....Jesus calls me His friend! How amazing is that?? I am a child of God; I am a co-heir with Christ; I am a friend of Jesus! As I mulled this over in my mind, it made me think of my relationship with my oldest daughter, Tiffany. Tiffany and I have always had a close mother/daughter relationship. But since she married four years ago, our relationship took on a new dimension of friendship. I have so enjoyed that new dimension! We talk about everything, we laugh together, we shop together, we eat out together, we enjoy "hanging out" together. Yet, in spite of taking on that new role, I love the fact that Tiffany still needs me to be "mom" for her as well. When she's sick, she calls mom. When she's hurting, she calls mom. When she has a special joy to share, she calls mom. No matter how close we may feel as "friends", I will always be "mom" to her....a role I cherish above all others!
I believe that's the same with our relationship with Jesus. Although He has given us the privilege of being His "friend" through which we can enjoy His presence, His confidence, and His fellowship, He is still the One to Whom we can cry out when we're hurting, when life turns upside down, when pain and heartache grips us. He's also the One with Whom we can share our praise and rejoicing over special joys and blessings in our lives.
Friends come in all different varieties. We have acquaintance friends - those people whose names we know and with whom we may have conversation from time to time. There are good friends - those people we see often and enjoy being around; and then there are our best friends - those whose company and companionship we seek out; those who know our deepest thoughts, longings, and dreams; those who know you so well they know what you're thinking; those who love you...warts and all. I believe that's the kind of friend Jesus is.....the closest of all friends. He's always there for a chat; He looks forward to hearing your dreams, your hopes, and your concerns; He loves you in spite of your failures and always sees the good in you; He is a friend Who will never fail you. What a privilege it is to call Him friend!
