Write Your Name on my Heart...Not Just my Bumper Sticker

Sitting in traffic the other day I had a minute while the light was red so I decided to take in a little light reading.  I started perusing the selection of bumper stickers that covered the back of the car in front of me and was confused by what I saw.  This particular driver had a sticker on one side of his bumper that declared that there’s “One Way,” while a sticker on the other side declared “God is dead.”

You may have a sticker or two on your car so others will know which sports team you like best, that you love Jesus, listen to a Christian radio station, or that you attend a certain church. 

If you’ve seen the sticker that asks you to “Honk if you love Jesus” you probably think they love Jesus but don’t really mean for you to beep your horn at them.  When those around us see our choices and actions, they know what we believe and they see what’s written on our hearts more clearly than any sticker could announce.  We can wear a T-shirt that tells the world we are Christians, but until they see the proof in our everyday lives and the choices we make, our labels are no more convincing than a bumper sticker on a Chevy Nova that claims, “My other car is a Leer Jet.”

So when I’m sitting at the light behind the guy with the conflicting stickers I am reminded that people pay more attention to my actions than my bumper and that it’s what’s written on my heart, not my bumper stickers, that really matters.

Janet, I laughed out loud when I read the line "people pay more attention to my actions than my bumper" because my backside immediately came to mind!  (*_*)  That's one bumper I really don't want people noticing too much!  But on a serious note....you are so right!  Our actions speak SO much louder than our words...no matter where those words are found!  And observing our actions is sometimes the only way people know what we believe.  We, as  Christians, never have "down" time in our behaviour.  We are representing Christ every moment of every day to someone! 

By the way....good use of your idle time in traffic!

Funny thing is, they probably know what we believe better than we do! Great observations!!!

Jennie - You're so funny!  But I had that same thought when I re-read it.  But I thought...'no one's brain is as twisted as mine!'  - - guess I was wrong about that.  :)   You're right....we never have the privilege of allowing ourselves "downtime" in our behavior.  My daughter pointed that out to me in the car just a couple of days ago when I was upset about a funny-looking part of a haircut.  I had to apologize for getting too wrapped up in too small a detail!

Mike n Laurie - I hadn't thought of that so I'm glad you shared....those around us really do know more of what we really believe than we often recognize in ourselves because our actions speak so much louder than our hearts and words.
