You know freeganism - and dumpster diving - has gone mainstream when it shows up on Oprah. (If you've never been dumpster diving, be sure to watch the video on the second page -- you'll be amazed.) So much for being cutting-edge.

I was actually pretty impressed with her report. She seemed to hit on all the major points - consumerism, waste, frugality, quality of life, landfills, the plight of the poor - without throwing in any scare tactics. I liked this quote by one of the Freegans they interviewed, "We'd much rather be known as people that dig in trash than people that buy needless things. You have to learn to not get your happiness from things. It's a pretty easy thing to learn once you try it."

How's that for standing our country's culture on end?
