What’s in a name?
What is it that intrigues people so much about a name?
Why is it that through the years , Man has counted on names with there very life?
Why should a name matter so much?
Names are important to some extant, but should never hold us hostage to were we can’t function.
Many of us look up to people with great names , names of people who have done great things!
Aristotle- Greek philosopher
Socrates- Greek philosopher
Plato- Greek philosopher
Dante Aligier- Italian poet
Shakespeare - 1616 play write and poet
Martin Luther King Jr.- preacher and civil rights leader
W. E. B. Dubois- famous black author
Booker T. Washington- American editor
Some of the greatest people who have gone down through the ages ,
Have contributed to us , by helping to shape nations, change minds, gave inspiration and hope
Greek philosophers, Italian poets, Civil Rights leaders, and American editors.
“No doubt , we should all be grateful for there abilities and insight”
But I ask you what is it in a name that drives us to worship and be mesmerized by mere names?
Yes these men have contributed to us in great ways, Fathers and mothers who we honor, preachers and teachers that we look up to, and on, and on we can go!
I believe these men did what they did out of passion and Love for the cause, and not for fame and glory, like some of us make them today!
It seems the church has forgotten , that there is but one name, that is above every name.
We need to remember
2:5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: 2:6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: 2:7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: 2:8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. 2:9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: 2:10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of [things] in heaven, and [things] in earth, and [things] under the earth; 2:11 And [that] every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ [is] Lord, to the glory of God the Father. The Church as we know it today, has tried to rid this wonderful name:
We seem to speak more of Soap Operas , and rappers , more than that wonderful name.
It seems we have substituted Jesus Name for , positions , titles , rather than his great name! forgetting that the church can’t survive without the powerful name of Jesus Christ.
The church can’t grow without this Name!
16:18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. Plato, once wrote “ They do certainly give very strange and new fangled names to diseases”
Dante said “ The noise of worldly fame is but a blast of wind, that blows from diverse points, and shifts it’s name, shifting the point it blows from”
Sheakpere in his famous play wrote- “ O Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo?
Deny thy father and refuse thy name” or, if thou wilt not, be but sworn my Love, and I’ll no longer be a Capulet” ( Act 1 scene #2)
He also wrote “ Tis but thy name that is my enemy: thou art thyself, though not a Montague. What’s Montague? It is nor hand, nor foot, nor arm, nor face, nor any part belonging to a man. O, be some other name! what’s in a name?
That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet; So Romeo would, were he not Romeo called, retain that dear perfection which he owes without that title. Romeo, doff thy name, and for thy name, which is no part of thee, take all myself”
These great words and expressions can never match the word of God!
The greatest writing, and the greatest name is the name of Jesus!
Keep Jesus name First in the church!
