10:35 And there came to him James and John, the sons of Zebedee, saying to him, Master, will you give us whatever may be our request? What's in it for me? Isn't this the approach most people take in life and, unfortunately, take with their faith? What can Jesus do for me? Thing about the above verse is that it comes just after Jesus has told the disciples what's going to happen to him---betrayal, torment, suffering, and death. And it's almost as if James and John havent even been listening OR they realize that Jesus isnt going to be around forever, so if they want something from him they better ask now. And basically ask Jesus to do something for them. But the Christian life is a lot like what JFKjr said being an American citizen was like: Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country. Being a Christian isnt all about what Jesus can do for you. Sure, he does a lot---he did all he needed to do on the cross by freeing us from sin and the fear of death. But it's plain selfish of us to seek in Christ only what he can do for us. Instead, we must learn from him all we can do for others. We must learn to take up our cross daily, making sacrifices where we put our wants aside and do for others as Christ has done for us. So ask not what Jesus can do for you, but what can you do for Jesus today! |
