Sorry if this sounds preachy, I just had to share. I just love seeing things I'd never really seen before in the bible. Earlier this week I ran across this...
23:39 One of the criminals who were hanged railed at him, saying, "Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us!" 23:40 But the other rebuked him, saying, "Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? 23:41 And we indeed justly; for we are receiving the due reward of our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong." 23:42 And he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom." 23:43 And he said to him, "Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise." I've read this a ton of times. But there are some words there that I'd never really noticed before. Look at what the second criminal says. I can't believe that I missed it before. He has heard about the kingdom! He knows Jesus's place in it! He has repented to the point that he considers his own death -- a cruel, painful death on the cross with the whole community there to mock every breath -- as just! This isn't someone who has just heard rumors about this Jesus. Somehow, somewhere along the way he encountered the real thing. Maybe Jesus finally got through to him by forgiving those that were crucifying Him. We aren't told. But we do get to see one glorious thing...
As long as we have life and breath, it isn't too late for Jesus to do a work in our lives. No matter how badly we have screwed up. No matter how little we think of ourselves.
Of course, there is a desperation to that as well -- one day it will be to late.
And (of course) I had to put together a song to celebrate this.
Not Too Late (chords are Dm C G G throughout)
Sometimes beauty's not pretty Just look at the cross Have you ever seen a victory That looked so much like a loss It's not too late No it's not too late
It's not too late - to cry out to Jesus It's not too late - to change our ways It's not too late - to cry out to Jesus And let the man on the cross take us to a higher, higher place It's not too late No it's not too late
Give me one more day Lord, one more hour to reach the lost for You It's not too late, say it's not too late Give me one more song Lord, one more breath to sing my praise to You It's not too late, say it's not too late
Come and mess up my plans Lord I give you free reign Come and mess up my plans Lord I give you free reign It's not too late No it's not too late
