I think for folks that grew up with a legalistic (in my case Catholic) background, you start to feel like your walk with the Lord is like your checkbook:  As long as I'm 'in the black' I'm OK, and then, as I inch into the red, you start to think about how to make the books even, and then you feel like it's too much to pay back, forgetting that the debts of the past are already absolved 100%, and any new sins will be forgiven as well.  It can be akin to being on a diet and 'falling off the wagon' as well...so much of our fleshly existence is tied to a 1:1 ratio of deserving to earning that we let it seep into our Christian lives.  That's when I feel further from God...when I forget how very powerful Jesus' blood is in removing my transgressions if I let it.
