Mark your calendars for the April 18th release of Ben Stein's Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed movie due out in theaters.  It surveys the landscape of mainstream science to see how politics is keeping the rising Intelligent Design movement out of the classroom.  For those unfamiliar with intelligent design theory, in brief the suggestion is that elements of cellular biology and astrophysics point decisively in favor of the conclusion that the universe is designed and not the product of either random chance or physical necessity.  It serves, not so much as a counter to evolution, but as an awareness that however life originated, it must not have been unguided.  There must be a Designer.

Critics of intelligent design charge that it is a "trojan horse" for the special creationism of the 70's and 80's to make a comeback.  But is it truly science when ideas are being stifled and sculpted to reflect only those ideas that they want to display?  This sounds like those who resisted the idea that the earth is not really the center of the universe.  According to physicist John Barrow, not even Einstein would get published in today's academic journals because they are more interested in "reinforcing orthodoxy" rather than promoting new ideas.

We mustn't neglect the next debate of the century!
