| Various Versions |
|
| |
My favorite version of the Bible is the New King James Version as I believe it is the closest to the original text. But I do like to read through the various versions to get a fresh prospective on God's Word. I have been reading through The Living Bible recently to help me understand the Old Testament a little better. Let's face it....these books can be very confusing and I wanted to hear these things in laymen's terms. Since I know that this version is very paraphrased and not real close to the original Hebrew/Greek text, I do check other versions/resources whenever I have a question or something just doesn't sound right. This has been an educational and inspirational experience. I have read from Genesis to 2 Chronicles 17 so far and I must say that the Lord has spoken to me through this easier to understand version. A good example of how clear this version is Deut 4:9 But watch out! Be very careful never to forget what you have seen God doing for you. May His miracles have a deep and permanent effect upon your lives! Tell your children and your grandchildren about the glorious miracles He did. While the KJV reads.... 4:9 Only take heed to thyself, and keep thy soul diligently, lest thou forget the things which thine eyes have seen, and lest they depart from thy heart all the days of thy life: but teach them thy sons, and thy sons' sons; Can you see how much easier it is to apply the first version to our daily lives? I love to read other versions to obtain various insights from the scriptures. How about you? What version do you like and why? Do you like to read other versions or do you stick with just one? |

| I like the NIV. I will go to my grave carrying an NIV. I do not like the proliferation of all the different versions and paraphrases of God's Word out there, it can really confuse younger Christians. I grew up on the RSV. I tried the KJV a few times but the thee's and thy's and the strange word order were just too much. The NIV is beautifully written and faithfully translated. The perfect combination of word for word translation and capture of the original meaning of the text. ~mike |

| Fables And Facts About The King James Bible | Over the past few decades, new Bible translations have been popping up like popcorn. Many strong Christians have stood their ground and continued to believe, read, and study only the Authorized King James Bible. Many others, however, have forsaken the Book that God has used for centuries. Such people have fallen for smooth advertising schemes and have actually started believing that the modern versions are superior to the King James Bible. It's very sad that most Christians today have not taken time to study the subject thoroughly enough to see what is really happening. Originally we published only one tract about the King James Bible. The tract is titled How I Know The King James Bible Is The Word Of God, and it presents some rather strong arguments for the KJV. Then we offered a second tract, titled Let's Compare Bibles. This tract shows how the modern Bible translations are literally attacking God's word! Both of these tracts are still available, and are free upon request. Now, by the grace of God, we are able to offer a third tract on the King James issue. We call it Fables And Facts About The King James Bible. It's purpose is to better educate Christians about the KJV by clearing up some of the fables that have been spread by the critics. Far too many Christians are accepting the Authorized Version by faith alone, rather than working and studying to become more grounded in some of the basic FACTS about this important issue. The following information should be helpful to the believer who desires to be readily armed with TRUTH. FABLE: The King James Bible was revised several times before 1800, so modern translations are just additional revisions of the original King James Bible of 1611. FACT: The so-called "revisions" of the King James Bible prior to 1800 were to correct typographical errors, add notes, and omit the Apocrypha from between the Testaments. There were no changes in the actual TEXT of the King James Bible. The REAL changes (over 36,000 of them) didn't start until the modern revisionists came on the scene. FABLE: The modern translations are more accurate because they have been translated from older and better manuscripts. FACT: It is truly amazing how so many Christians have bought into this lie without ever checking to see WHAT these manuscripts are, WHERE they came from, and WHO wrote them. It's also strange that no one seems to be asking the question, "Has God honored these 'older' and 'better' manuscripts throughout Church History?" The modern translations are based on the work of two nineteenth century Greek scholars from England--B. F. Westcott and F. J. A. Hort. Westcott and Hort, who were deeply involved in the occult, hated the Textus Receptus Greek text, from which the King James Bible was translated, so they conjured up THEIR OWN Greek text. This Westcott and Hort Greek text was based primarily on two very corrupt fourth century ROMAN CATHOLIC manuscripts: Codex Vaticanus (discovered in the Pope's library in 1481) and Sinaiticus (discovered in 1859 in a trash can at St. Catherine's monastery on Mt. Sinai). These are usually the "older" and "better" manuscripts that we keep hearing so much about. These manuscripts support most of the attacks in the new versions. The Vaticanus is considered to be the most authoritative, although it is responsible for over thirty-six thousand changes that appear today in the new versions. This perverted manuscript contains the books of the pagan Apocrypha, which are not scripture; it omits the pastoral epistles (I Timothy through Titus), the Book of Revelation, and it cuts off the Book of Hebrews at Hebrews 9:14 (a very convenient stopping point for the Catholic Church, since God forbids their priesthood in Hebrews 10!). The attacks on the word of God found in these manuscripts originated in Alexandria, Egypt with the deceitful work of such pagan Greek "scholars" as Origen and Clement of Alexandria. Then in 313 A.D. the Roman emperor Constantine ordered fifty copies of "the Bible" from Eusebius, the Bishop of Caesaria. Eusebius, being a devout student of Origen's work, chose to send him manuscripts filled with Alexandrian corruption, rather than sending him the true word of God in the SYRIAN text from Antioch, Syria. So the corrupt Alexandrian text (also called the "Egyptian" or "Hesychian" type text) found it's way into the Vatican manuscript, then eventually into the Westcott and Hort Greek Text, and finally into the new "Bible" versions in your local "Christian" bookstore. Therefore, when you hear or read of someone "correcting" the King James Bible with "older" or "more authoritative" manuscripts, you are simply hearing someone trying to use a ROMAN CATHOLIC text to overthrow the God-honored text of the Protestant Reformation and the great revivals. God has never honored this corrupt text and He never will. FABLE: New translations are needed to correct the errors and contradictions in the King James Bible. FACT: No one has ever proven that there are errors and contradictions in the KJV. Many "Christian" colleges and preachers have a nasty habit of pointing out APPARENT contradictions to their people, but these arguments have been disproven so many times that it is nothing less than disgusting to hear them still being used. FABLE: New Translations are needed to bring the archaic Old English language up to date. People have trouble understanding the language of the King James Bible. FACT: The King James language is NOT hard to understand. Most of the so-called "archaic" words are explained by the context of the passage or by comparing the passage with other passages in the Bible where the same word is used. Heady and high-minded people resent the King James language because it is plain and simple, and it isn't in tune with their high-minded vocabulary. In fact, the Grade Level Indicator of the Flesch-Kincaid research company says the King James language is EASIER to understand than the new versions. We certainly agree that the language of the King James Bible is a unique language, but why shouldn't it be? It's the WORD OF GOD! FABLE: The King James Bible cannot be infallible because the translators were only men, and all men are sinners. The human element prevents the KJV from being infallible. FACT: If this is true, then even the ORIGINAL AUTOGRAPHS in Hebrew and Greek were not infallible, because they too were penned by men! The fact of the matter is that the King James translators were only INSTRUMENTS of preservation (which is exactly what they called themselves in the Dedicatory to the A.V. 1611). God has always been the Divine Preserver of His word (Psa. 12:6-7), but He has used men as tools and instruments of preservation, just as He uses men to teach and preach His words. When men humbly yield themselves to the will of God, God can use them to accomplish His will (Rom. 12:1-2), and this is precisely what happened between 1604 and 1611. FABLE: The King James translators added to the word of God, because the italicized words in the KJV were not in the originals. FACT: The italics in the KJV prove that the translators were HONEST in their work. They set the words in italics so we'd know they were not in the manuscripts they were using. Besides, no one has a copy of the original manuscripts today, so no one knows for certain that the italicized words aren't in them. In fact, there are many cases where we know that the italicized words are justified. For example, notice in Deuteronomy 8:3 that the word "word" is in italics. However, when Jesus quotes this verse in Matthew 4:4 he INCLUDES the italicized word! If the italicized word does not belong in the Bible, why did the Lord Jesus quote it? FABLE: The original King James Bible included the Apocrypha in the Old Testament. FACT: The King James translators knew the Apocrypha was not scripture, so they placed it BETWEEN the Old and New Testament as a HISTORICAL DOCUMENT, not as scripture. Friend, don't be deceived by the crafty critics of God's word. LEARN THE FACTS! |

Every letter in hebrew has a meaning! So every word has HOUNDREDS of meanings. I think that GOD would not allow his WORD to be miss printed. Even if someone tried to taint HIS WORD they would only express one of the other meanings if not the same meaning in a new light. |

Youth Past, What has that to do with the perversions in the modern versions? As I expected no one has yet taken the time to examine the changes in the modern bibles, and actually comment on the information. The Charts were put together by other than myself, but if you will bother to compare bibles you will find that they are indeed accurate. Do your self a favor examine the differences knowledge is nothing to shy from. The New KIng James article aslo was not my article, however you have not even commented or tried to refute any of the information. If you later have an intelligent qiestion or knowledgeable comment okay otherwise do not bother. I don't have time for silly comments. | |

Hi Sue, my favorite is the NASB. When I first became a follower of Christ, my brother Jim gave me a Greek/Hebrew study Bible - it is a NASB. I'm sentimental :-) Like you, I have many translations. Including the KJB, the NKJB, the NIV...ohhh, and Da Jesus Book (Hawaii Pidgin New Testament). Dang...look at the time. That's what happens when you take a nap on Sunday. peace, grace, love, Mary Ann |

I like what JReed had to say on this topic. I think we can learn from the different versions. Clyde, please don't be offended, but I would much rather hear a brief, heart felt comment from you(even if I disagree) then to just have you post things from the internet. I really don't have time to read these types of long winded documents. Could you please sum up your thoughts in a few sentences coming from you. Thank you. |

| I think I got my initials wrong for King James and New King James. Oh well. That's what I meant by KJB and NKJB (using bible instead of version for the last letter :-)) |

Hi Sue, sorry I am not easily offended, my post were to give a back ground of the bible version perversion issue. Sorry the post were loaded in such a bunch up manner the were not originally that way. Read them or not that is your choice. However, Here is, my personal testimony as to how I came to know about the Bible version issue. ````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````` The year I taught middle school at a Christian School, I had very little knowledge of the modern versions of the bible or even knew that that there was even an issue over them. Growing up as a Southern Baptist boy all I new was the King James Bible, In addition, that was the only bible I had ever read or studied. I eventually did acquire a comparative Bible with four different side-by-side translations, and I would sometimes look at the other versions verses when I was not sure what the king James was saying. The alternate version verses some times confirmed what I already thought the verse meant, but at times, they said something a little different, so I would just go back re read and maybe consult an all Greek New Testament Text by Nestle Aland or my Greek Interlinear Bible, or do a word search in my Strong’s Concordance. All the time I thought I was doing the right thing. I thought I had great faith in the Bible as a Gods word in English, but my actions were saying something different. If my faith in what God has said in the Bible was as strong as I thought it was, I would not have need to go to a source other than the Holy Spirit and prayer to help me understand. Then an incident happen at a Christian School where I taught middle school and my eyes were opened to the deception and perversions of Gods’ word and I started a study of this issiue which has been on going since that day in 2004. The high school teacher and my self started the day with a bible study and Q&A. One of the students asked the question “why in Matthew Chapter 17: 16 – 20, the Disciples of Jesus could not cast the evil spirits out of the boy called a lunatick. The High school teacher began answering the question by lecturing around the idea that the disciples were in unbelief and did not have enough faith as it says in verse 17: 20. He then began to take another question, but I stopped him and finished answering the previous question with verse 17:21, which said, “Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting”. I thought at the time, he just forgotten about verse 17:21. He looked a little confused at what I had said, but we went on. I knew that he used a NASB Bible, but again at the time, I did not think it made any difference. As most Christians do, I thought that the other versions say the same thing but in a different way. I was in for the shock of my Christian life. The next hour was our planning period. I found a copy of the NASB Bible he read from, to try and find out why he did not use verse 17:21 in his answer, ( As the incident kept bothering me). I looked up Matthew chapter 17 in his NASB Bible and looked for verse 21, but to my shock, it was not in the main body of text, no wonder he did not use it. In the NASB Bible that he studied and read from this verse had been removed and inserted at the bottom of the page in a small-italicized footnote, with no explanation as to why.
The NASB Text went directly from verse 20 right to verse 22 completely omitted the verse number 21. This started me thinking, what else I might I find omitted, put in a small footnote, or what else could be left out. I then began a research and comparison of the NASB Bible and then other alternate versions as well (including the New King James Bible, the most deceptive of all). What I have found and did not find, in the way of verses left out, has made me repent to God for not trusting in him to provide the exact word for the English speaking person, and trying to understand his word by other means, other than through prayer and the Holy Spirit. My study included all of he popular modern versions in use in most Churches today. I found in my comparisons that not one of the modern versions were guiltless in changing words to mean something else, omitting verses, changing the very context of various passages, and casting doubt as to whether any version can be trusted to be right. The best one could hope for is a Bible smorgasbord, a kind pick what you like approach. Adrian Rogers made a comment at the end of one of his sermons concerning the Bible and its characteristics, He said, quote, “the Bible is deep enough for scholars to swim in and never touch the bottom of understanding, yet it is shallow enough for even the simplest mind to comprehend. I am not sure exactly how he meant that statement, but to me it said that the scholars are ever pursuing knowledge and understanding through scholarly means and will never understand it, until they come to it in faith and understand it as a child would, with the simplest of faith.
May the Lord of Glory Jesus Christ Richly Bless you in all that you put your hand to do, A brother in Christ Jesus, Clyde |

The New King James Bible Examined By M. H. Reynolds, Editor, Foundation Magazine WHAT ABOUT THE NEW KING JAMES BIBLE? In this article, we want to share with God's people some of the important facts which led us to reject the NKJV and warn others about it. We do not believe that the "NKJV makes the KJV even better" as its publishers claim. To the contrary, our study leads us to conclude that the NKJV violates the original, reliable, accurate KJV in a most deceptive manner. While claiming to have "preserved the authority and accuracy" of the original KJV, the actual result is a hybrid text which incorporates many changes identical with or similar to the corruptions found in other modern Bible versions. Why the New King James Bible? Its publisher, Thomas Nelson Company, says its purpose is: "To Preserve the Integrity of the Original in the Language of Today"- "To preserve the authority and accuracy . . . of the original King James while making it understandable to 20th Century readers"- "To update with regard to punctuation and grammar; archaic verbs and pronouns"; and "Up-to-date accuracy with regard to words whose English meaning has changed over a period of 3 1/2 centuries. " The completed NKJV text is said to be "Beautifully Clear" and "Highly Readable." Thomas Nelson Publishers has spent millions to convince Christians that the NKJV is "the" Bible of the present and the future. Why do we recommend rejection of the NKJV? Space limitations preclude a full discussion of every reason, but we do urge a careful consideration of the following facts. It is essential to know that many of the word changes between the original KJV and the NKJV are not changes which result from removing archaisms, etc. Instead, many are changes which clearly reveal that, contrary to their agreed basis, the NKJV translators departed from the original KJV and its underlying Greek text, the Textus Receptus, in favor of the very same wording found in versions translated from corrupted Greek texts. The instances in which the NKJV breaks with the original KJV by substituting wording identical to that of corrupted modern Bible versions are too numerous to be considered coincidence. And, since Nelson tells us that the NKJV scholars spent "months of pra yer, research, and discussion over the handling of a single word," we must conclude that these changes were neither coincidental nor accidental. The following references are listed as examples of the way the translators inserted erroneous words and meanings from corrupted modern Bible versions into the NKJV text: Titus 3:10-KJV reads, "A man that is an heretick...reject. " NKJV and NIV change "heretick" to "divisive man"; RSV and NASV to "factious" man. (The one who holds to heresy is to be rejected, not the one who exposes false doctrine. The new versions confuse who is in mind here). Acts 4:27-KJV reads, "Thy holy child, Jesus." NKJV, NASV and RSV change "holy child" to "holy servant Acts 8:9-KJV reads, "bewitched the people." NKJV and NASV change "bewitched" to "astonished." NIV and RSV change "bewitched" to "amazed." Romans 1:25-KJV reads, "changed the truth of God into a lie." NKJV, NASV and NIV read "exchanged the truth of God for the lie" or "a lie." Romans 4:25-KJV reads, "Who was delivered for our offenses and was raised again for our justification." NKJV and NASV change "for" to "because of." (Even the NIV and RSV use the correct word, "for"). 2 Corinthians 10:5-KJV reads, "Casting down imaginations." NKJV, NIV and RSV change "imaginations" to "arguments." Colossians 3:2-KJV reads, "Set your affection on things above." NKJV, NASV, NIV and RSV change "affection" to "mind." 1 Thessalonians 5:22-KJV reads, "Abstain from all appearance of evil." NKJV, NASV and RSV change "appearance" to "form." 2 |
