| Review: The Simpsons Movie |

If you are familiar with The Simpsons on TV and if you can tolerate the completely irreverent humor of America's most dsyfunctional animated family, then you'll like this one. Confession: I laughed out loud which I don't tend to do at movies. This should tell you something about how strange I really am (I thought "Fargo" was funny too). There must be an irreverent me that remains close to the surface. If you haven't already done it, put out a restraining order on me. The movie is funny, especially for fans of the show. The first half hour works really well but then it kind of loses steam. It comes at you real fast. Nothing is sacred and American stupidity is attacked full force in the areas or cultural attitudes, pop entertainment, politics, sex, etc. Yes, even Christianity is attacked. Like I said, nothing is sacred. I suddenly discovered how violent the Simpson family really is (no spoilers). The Itchy & Scratchy cartoon that appears at the beginning of the movie is great! The story eventually settles in on itself about half way through and you get to see how Homer's stupidity and cluelessness pushes his family apart and the laughs kind of die down. A little too heavy on environmentalism. The movie is funny and mornically intelligent as only the Simpson's can be. (***.5) |
