I stayed at home yesterday to work on my Senior thesis (Five weeks & three days till graduation...woohoo!!!), but went outside to let my little chickens out.
For those of you who don't know I was raised in the city, but have lived in a SMALL rural area for the last 21 years...This last year, I decided to try raising some chickens & guineas for tick control......
Lot of trial & error things, but I brought home a Foster chicken about eight weeks ago to raise some abandoned babies who were about 2-3 days old.....I converted a small garage to the hen house & have been feeding & watering in there to keep the "varmits" away from the babies & keep them protected.
They've grown like crazy & now have individual personalities. The last couple of weekends, I've sat outside nearby, while I opened the garage door to let them into the yard, so foster chicken "Bertha" can teach them chicken things (I'm not experienced...I'm from the city, remember?) They'd come out for a few minutes, scratch at the dirt, eat a feed bugs & run back into the garage........until yesterday....
Since I was home & it was partly sunny & fairly nice out, I opened the door first thing in the morning...AND CAME IN THE HOUSE...to work on my thesis...but I kept checking on the chickens throughout the day. The chickens would be outside & then go inside to get warm, sit on the nests, etc........the guineas were another story.
They kept coming to the edge of the garage but would not venture out...except for two......who eventually flew to the roof, basking in the sun, eating fresh budding leaves off the trees & enjoying the day...
It reminded me how much that is like God watching over us......when we are secure in Him, and know we are grounded, we can think, and learn, and just be who we are, because we know we belong "In the House"...
I went out & called to them, them & they came running....to the House. Then I closed them up for the night, knowing I had done all I could to keep them safe & ready for another day of who they were created to be. Isn't that what God does for us? He provides for us, feeds for us, and keeps us under the Shadow of His Wing & "In the House" to protect us to live for Him another day.
